The Winchesters 1×05, Season 1, Episode 5, “Legend of a Mind” aired November 15, 2022 on The CW
So much is happening! The threat of the Akrida continues to grow and Ada’s very personal connection to the case in this episode proves to be a huge help (and a huge tearjerker). Also, we are watching this show for more than the love story, but can we PLEASE get a John/Mary make-out session soon? WE ARE DYING OVER HERE!
Here’s what went down in The Winchesters 1×05!
The episode opened with a Councilman who was being haunted by something. The “monster” or whatever it is appears to him in nightmares, but then when he wakes up, he grabs his head in pain and dies. Not everyone is as enthusiastic about taking the case with the threat of the Akrida looming, but Ada is eager to check it out after hearing the victim was having nightmares. After talking to the Councilman’s colleague, the gang thinks the culprit is a Djinn!
A Shocking Connection
They start checking warehouses for the Djinn and they find him, but it’s an easy monster hunt – the (half) Djinn is Ada’s son! It’s so sad to see the heartbreak on Ada’s face as she shares the story of her Djinn love who was killed by hunters before she realized she was pregnant with Tony, her half Djinn son. Tony visits Ada in her dream, but he isn’t the one killing people. He was lured to Lawrence by a strange sound. We had a feeling that Ada’s connection to hunting would be a sad one (because they all are), but we weren’t prepared to hear the heartbreaking story of how she lost her Djinn love and her son.
Mary and John
As is the theme with most of John and Mary’s conversations, a sweet back and forth about a motorcycle turns into a conversation about the future. John is still new to the hunting life and still sees a light at the end of the tunnel, and he sees it for Mary, too – even if she doesn’t. Mary is hopeful that she can leave the hunting life someday, but the trauma she faced as a child really show how Mary has always felt trapped by her hunting lifestyle. We know how the story ends for these two, but hopefully they get to have some peaceful living before ol’ yellow eyes shows up.
Follow Your Heart
Yes, there is a big monster issue and a case to solve, but thankfully, there is always time for a little romance talk. Mary asks Ada about her relationship with Tony’s father and Ada seems to ease Mary’s hesitation about going for things with John.
Be a Good Guy
After Mary is attacked by the creepy bug monster, Ada goes to find Tony to ask him for his help to save her. They need to get the splinters out of Mary’s brain and her mind. Tony thinks that the key to defeating the Akrida is to help Mary face her most traumatic memories in the darkest part of the mind.
John goes in to help Mary face her trauma. You can really see the bond between them as he stays by her side to help her face her darkest memories. Mary’s young life is so full of trauma and it’s so sad to see the horrors she has been through. The pressure and anxiety that her hunting family put on her really show why she wanted Dean and Sam far from the hunting life.
Open Your Heart
Mary is saved and everyone can finally take a moment to relax. Just when we think we will get an honest conversation about their feelings, John seems to clam up again. It’s clear that Mary is ready to open up to John, but he doesn’t seem to be ready to share his heart with her. But he does decide to share his motorcycle. It’s not clear what’s holding John back, because it’s clear that he really cares for Mary. Hopefully these two will be on the same page soon!
While John, Tony and Mary worked to fight the Akrida’s stingers in Mary’s mind, Lata and Carlos began to connect the dots between the Akrida’s victims. They realize that the name that keeps showing up in their research is Roxanne – just like the radio personality! They have learned so much more about the Akrida in this episode (like how the Akrida are bug-like creatures that are collecting the essence of slain monsters), but we still have so many questions .
