Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One Trailer – Top 5 Takeaways

Tom Cruise running in trailers again... nature is healing!

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One is the penultimate chapter in the story of America’s favorite sprinting super spy, Ethan Hunt. Director Christopher McQuarrie is back to direct Tom Cruise (Hunt) and the rest of the Impossible Mission Force.

Let’s get into the top five takeaways!

1. Run Tom, Run

Is it a Tom Cruise movie without a gratuitous shot of running? At this point, the question is how long he will run without a camera cut. I am setting the over/under at 20 seconds and will be accepting bets until the world premiere. Speaking of the world premiere…

2. 2023?!

This is the most audacious thing that this franchise has done. Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One will not be released until OVER a year from this trailer date! How dare they! Who do they think they are?! I am both outraged and incensed… I’m still going though.

3. IMF not “Good Guys”?

We don’t get too much in terms of clear narrative for this outing. If history teaches us anything, Ethan will go rogue and need to restore order. The opening dialogue for the trailer seems to lay out that there is no “order”. It’s possible that IMF has been operating in good faith, but it’s impossible missions have not been for the “greater good”. What exactly happens when Ethan has no moral center to which to return?

4. Gorgeous Cinematography

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One looks beautiful! Something about McQuarrie’s shot composition just lands every time. The shots of car chases put you right inside the action. The push and pull of the camera as soldiers storm through the doorway is dynamic. There is a real sense of movement that keeps the eye engage and the mind ensnared.

5. Cliff Jump

The highlight of this franchise has become “what death defying stunt will Tom Cruise do this time”? The final shot of the trailer does not disappoint! A normal actor would most definitely let their stunt double ride a motorcycle off a cliff into a free fall jump. Tom Cruise is clearly no normal actor. I currently can’t PROVE that Cruise is the one riding off of the cliff, but you just know he is. Cruise has been the biggest name in stunt performing since Ghost Protocol and the Burj Kalifah stunt.

Final Thoughts

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One looks to be the beginning of an epic send off for a cast of characters that have been assembling since 1996. They continually raise the bar and defy expectations. There is no reason to believe that this chapter will be anything short of phenomenal.

Side note, “Impossible Mission Force” is still the worst name in the spy game.

Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One opens domestically in theaters on July 14th, 2023.
