‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Trailer – Top 5 Takeaways

Sequels find a way...

Jurassic World Dominion looks to be the final chapter in the Jurassic Park universe. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be joined on film by some original trilogy veterans, but will that be enough to cleanly stick the landing?

Let’s take a look at my top five takeaways.

1. Reunited and it Feels so Good

Jurassic World Dominion has sufficiently pressed the nostalgia button. Say what you want about the rest of the trailer, but there is something confidence boosting about seeing Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Alan Grant (Sam Neill) breathing the same dinosaur infested air again. It’s almost as if this short snip alone takes you right back to the magic of the first film. It may not be enough to carry the film, but this does peak my interests.

2. So… Humanity is Going to Lose, Right?!

Hollywood does not have the fortitude to end this franchise on an apocalyptic note. Further, after Star-Lord couldn’t keep his composure long enough to defeat Thanos, I don’t think Chris Pratt can survive being the face of another extinction level event. How, then, do you wrap this up? It is said directly in the trailer that humans and dinosaurs cannot coexist. What possible positive outcome can be derived from this?

3. Are the Dinosaurs Making Babies?

What Grogu Baby Yoda has established within the cultural zeitgeist is that the baby version of anything is cute and merchandisable. Dominion seems to be testing that theory with Blue having a baby. One question: did Blue do the bow-chicka-wow-wow? How long ago did this happen? Existence seems doomed enough without knowing the genetically modified zombie lizards can also procreate.

4. Bryce Dallas Howard Deserves a Medal

This will not be a taking point for many, but BDH has been nothing short of Usain Bolt throughout these films. We all know that there is nothing more that digital sprites chasing her, but I believe that she believes that she’s in danger. Most movie running looks like the actor maybe heard of running before then did some fitness classes at the local Y to understand the mechanics :::cough::: EZRA MILLER :::cough:::. Conversely, Bryce is hauling ass and trying to get the hell out of dodge. Salute to her!

5. No, But Seriously… Humanity Loses, Right?!

Please take a moment of you time to really analyze what we are being asked to believe. There is a scene where DeWanda Wise and Chris Pratt are armed with a taser and small knife respectively. They are trying to fight a faster, stronger, apex predator. This feels similar to a large dog bearing down on you and your first line of defense is chucking your keys to slow it down. Best care scenario, you just pissed it off! Thanos could show up and eliminate half of all the dinosaurs and I’m still not convinced that would move the needle.

Final Thoughts

These movies are in your wheelhouse, or they are not. The “world” portion of the franchise has been a bit all over the place and largely missing the majestic spectacle that made the original Jurassic Park a classic. That being said, these films remain extremely popular. They may be bloated and dumb, but they remain entertaining. Hopefully this last installment brings the entire franchise to a satisfying close and when won’t be seeing any it’s genetically modified offspring on the big screen moving forward.

Jurassic World Dominion is set to hit theaters domestically on June 10th 2022.
