‘Superstore’ 6×05 recap: “Hair Care Products”

Superstore is back, and tackles systematic racism in its newest episode

Superstore 6×05 “Hair Care Products” aired January 14, 2021.

Superstore is back from its mid-season hiatus, and it’s coming back strong! Indeed, as we saw before, the show never shied away from airing topical episodes in the past. Well, Superstore 6×05 was another of these episodes.

All the while still fighting the pandemic, this week’s episode talked about systematic racism, and in particular racism towards Black people. Here’s what happened in Superstore 6×05:

A Garrett-centric episode

With Glenn in quarantine since last episode, Dina remains in charge of the store. During her morning briefing, she informs the employees of corporate’s new policy: from now on, Black beauty products won’t be locked up anymore.

It’s a small change that consequently pushes the employees to think and talk about systematic racism. Without truly meaning to, Garrett finds himself as a leader of the discussions while they try to put together a list to send to corporate of things that need to be changed inside the store.

Obviously though, in true Superstore fashion, nothing goes according to plan. Between people’s own personal requests or Glenn feeling bad and wanting to make things better by… buying pizzas, of all things, compiling that list appears to be harder than it should.

Still, it allows for some needed conversations to happen and for the characters (and us) to think about privilege. All the while making us laugh for twenty minutes.

The ending isn’t completely happy, yet like Dina says, still a step in the right direction: the list does get sent, but it will probably take weeks before it reaches the right people who could do something about it

Wear a mask!

Meanwhile, the subplot of this week’s episode reminds us we’re still in the middle of a pandemic and we shouldn’t forget it.

When Cheyenne and Mateo ask Sandra if she wants to join in an outdoor movie night, she refuses. Indeed, she’s seen how they don’t seem to take the pandemic seriously enough (case in point: they don’t wear their masks in the store). So, she doesn’t want to take any risks.

Cheyenne and Mateo, who thought they were doing her a favor by inviting her, don’t take her refusal very well. They try to show her that they do take the pandemic seriously, but there is no changing Sandra’s mind. Even when they show her negative test results for the coronavirus, her answer is still no.

She does agree to come in the end, though, but only after they tell her it’s only gonna be the three of them watching a movie of her choice. Which… isn’t very appealing to Cheyenne and Mateo anymore.

Some more thoughts:

  • Once again, Superstore managed to write a beautiful, yet still very funny, important episode.
  • Cheyenne and Mateo talking about her relationship with Bo… could this be a nod to the future Bo & Cheyenne spinoff?
  • We should all be like Sandra and remember to be careful during this pandemic!
  • It really is such a shame we only have a few episodes left of the show to enjoy before it leaves us for good… I know I will miss it.
