‘In the Dark’ 2×03: “Son of a Gun” recap

The mystery is building and so is our stress!

In the Dark 2×03, Season 2, Episode 3, “Son of a Gun” aired April 30, 2020 on The CW.

This show is so stressful and this season has really kicked up that tension. This episode created so many worrisome moments that we had to remind ourselves that we are actively and passionately rooting for these characters to NOT get caught breaking the law. TV is weird like that.

Here’s what went down:

Heartbreak to the Max. Murphy is still devastated by her breakup with Max, and so are we. Those flashbacks were super sweet and so, so sad. Murphy has always made it clear that sex is sex, but these intimate flashbacks with Max show how deeply she connected with him. She is so upset that she goes and cuddles with Jess for the night and we need to go cry now.

Max’s very bad day. Max has for sure contributed to the terrible set of circumstances he is currently facing, but it’s still so hard to see him suffering so much. Like Murphy, he is heartbroken, but he is also on the run, and without the safety net of money that he stashed. His bad day just continues to get worse. He shaved his head and then got arrested by Dean, and then got stuck in an elevator with him. It’s like the worst rom-com ever. Oh, and he never got to eat his pizza. Rude.

Darnell. It’s so nice to see Darnell smile again, but now that Max has been arrested, we are sure that Nia will come for Darnell. We just want him to be happy in his new life and his new job. Ugh, he should have left Chicago.

Mo’ money, mo’ drama. Felix is juggling the money laundering biz hand-offs and threats from Sam, but now he wants to carry a gun of his own. Also, the recent boom in business at Guiding Hope has drawn the attention of the IRS! Jess and Murphy are feeling the heat when the IRS guy comes back for a dog grooming and it’s so funny to see them panic as they try to stay cool. He is clearly suspicious about the cash flow. Not good.

Jess and Sterling. We love them already and we can’t wait to see more of these two. We will miss the wonderful awkward way Jess would attempt to talk to her, but we like this more. Jess says it’s casual, but we shall see!

Deal, no deal. Dean tracked down Max, arrested him and then decided to let him go if Max gave him a key piece of info about Nia’s operation. Max would run and Dean would get what he needed. It’s a great plan, but nobody planned on Officer Gene. Oh, Gene.

Complications. So it turns out that the IRS guy didn’t go back to investigate Guiding Hope or have sex with Murphy – he is going blind and wanted to check out Guiding Hope for personal reasons. Problem solved? Nope! The second it seems that the IRS problem is over, the IRS guy is given Max’s file! This will FOR SURE lead him back to Murphy. Yikes.

Dead Ben. Another big “YIKES” – Felix’s gun was there with Dead Ben. Did Felix kill a guy?! AHHHH!
