‘In the Dark’ 2×02: “Cross My Heart and Hope to Lie” recap

The mystery is building and our hearts are breaking!

In the Dark 2×02, Season 2, Episode 2, “Cross My Heart and Hope to Lie” aired on The CW April 23, 2020.

We are two episodes into the second season and things are already so intense and emotional! Murphy and Jess are amazing, Max is back, Dean is hot on his tail and Felix is still the best. Even with all of the crazy tension and the unexplained murder of Ben, the most compelling part of this episode is the emotional side of things.

Poor Dead Ben. Before we get to the mushy stuff, let’s talk about the mystery. In this episode, we get another glimpse of the Dead Ben at the bar and we see that Murphy is with Felix! We also need to point out that neither of them looked as shocked as you’d think as they stand over a dead body. The story-lines haven’t caught up to each other yet, but we did get to see a little more of Alive Ben in this episode. He is pretty useless as a receptionist, but we are still super interested in this random, dead guy.

Reunited and it feels so good! One of the best parts of this episode was the EPIC Max and Murphy reunion! Totally hot hotel sex aside, this reunion was so sweet, tender and deeply emotional. And the super cute admission that Max loves her (which we all already know) was so, so sweet and we love them.

Nia spilled the tea. Darnell was destroyed after discovering the Jules was dead and he didn’t believe it was a suicide, but there was never any evidence. It’s clear that the death of Jules has changed him, and it’s not shocking that he wants to leave this all behind him, but everything changes when Darnell finds out that Nia was behind Jules’ death. It’s amazing to see the sudden shock on his face and how quickly he can hide it in order to keep his relationship with Jules a secret, even now.

Darnell and Max’s common ground. In order to get out of Nia’s crew, Darnell is tasked with tracking down Max to kill him. After a super scary non-encounter with Murphy, Darnell is able to find Max. They were so close in the first season, so it’s super upsetting to see Darnell even contemplating the idea of killing Max and then holding a gun to his head.

Thankfully, Darnell drops the gun and they have a long overdue chat about what went down and Max comes clean about why he has come back – love. And if anyone can understand the lengths one will go for love, it’s Darnell. Love is their common ground and it’s what makes Darnell lie to Nia about killing Max.

Dean and Gene. Dean is back on the force and this once vanilla dude is now terrifying AF. The only thing that tones down his creepy factor in this episode is Gene, his energetic and eager new partner. If you would have told us in Season 1 that we would find Dean scary, we never would have believed it.

Goodbye is the only way. Ugh, our already fragile hearts could hardly make it through this fake-up (fake break-up). Murphy loves Max and that’s exactly why she has to make him believe that she doesn’t want to be with him. She needs him to leave in order to keep him safe and it’s so sad. Murphy and Max have always had a strong connection, but now that we have reached the “L” word level, we refuse to believe that this is the end.

Jess and Murphy. There are many reasons to love this show, but Jess and Murphy’s relationship is our favorite one. They fight, they clash, but they love each other so much and it’s so heartwarming to watch them come together during this uncertain time in their lives. Even after a big fight, Jess doesn’t hesitate to run to Murphy’s aid when she realizes Dean is heading her way. They are unbreakable and their incredible bond takes this already great show to the next level. We are obsessed.

Theory time. So now that we are moving closer to the events of the night that Ben is killed, we are starting to have some new theories. Our new theory is sort of a baby theory, but we think that Gene is either working with the feds or with Nia. Maybe Ben too. It’s all very interesting and we can’t wait to see what happens next!

What did you think of the episode? Do you think Gene is just Gene, the cop, or is there more to it? Hit the comments and let us know!
