‘In the Dark’ Season 1: Why you should binge it right now

You can thank us later.

In November, The CW announced it’s renewal of just about every show, which is actually really great news because a few of the long running shows are ending this year. Much of The CW lineup is based in the Arrowverse or the Archie-verse (Katy Keene, the Riverdale spin-off debuts Feb. 6th) and we love these shows so, so much.

We also really love the shows that are based in the “real world” where the only monsters are of the human variety. In the Dark is one of those shows.

The show centers on Murphy, a hard drinking, jaded blind woman and her quest to solve a murder. It’s filled with characters that constantly teeter back and forth on a line between good and bad, Murphy included. Season 1 is streaming on Netflix and Season 2 is set to air (likely) in the spring of 2020 on The CW (a premiere date has not yet been set).

Here’s why you should binge Season 1 now:

The Female Friendship

The friendship between Murphy and Jess feels so real and authentic. You get a strong sense of that bond as early as their first scene in the pilot. And it’s not always perfect, which is often the case in most relationships. It’s refreshing to see how close they are, but to also see them fight and talk about their issues. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows all the time and that’s okay, but you will never doubt for a second how much they love each other.

The Romance

There are multiple romantic story-lines in Season 1 that sort of weave in and out of the story. Murphy and Max’s connection is as endearing as it is frustrating and you will love ever minute of it. Without spoiling anything, one of the good guys is in love with one of the bad guys, and makes some terrible decisions because of it. Jess, Murphy’s roommate, has maybe the most relatable romantic arc with her girlfriend Vanessa. And there are lots of sexy time things going on here – just overall.

Pretzel, the dog

There is a dog in this show. That’s it. That’s the reason.

The Mystery

The driving force for Murphy in Season 1 is a murder. She is determined to figure out what happened to her friend and will stop at nothing. There are so many twists and turns that the actual truth will legit surprise you. It’s a well built mystery with a very big and shocking reveal. Buckle up!

The Music

Many of the The CW shows have amazing music (looking at you Roswell, New Mexico) and so does In the Dark. The music is so moody and sometimes makes you feel like you have been transported back in time to a smoky club in the old days of Chicago. There is also a random Third Eye Blind sing-along which always earns a giant seal of approval from us.

Good vs. Bad

This show does an amazing job of pushing us to question good vs. bad. We are programmed to cheer on the good guys and shake our heads at the bad guys, but Season 1 refuses to let anyone fall into one category. The “good guys” do bad things and the “bad guys” do good things. There are no clear cut villains or heroes in this story, except Pretzel. He’s the goodest boy. Everyone else hovers in the gray area more than once and it makes it all the more complex and compelling to watch.

You can stream Season 1 of In the Dark on Netflix. Season 2 will air on The CW in 2020.
