‘The Magicians’ 5×03: 5 best moments from “The Mountain of Ghosts”

Fights, fights and more fights.

The Magicians 5×03 recap: Season 5, Episode 03, “The Mountain of Ghosts,” Aired Jan. 29, 2020

Our emotions were NOT ready for everything that went down in this episode. Jules and Penny are still trying to work out the surge issue, but the really heavy hitting stories this week are in Fillory as Eliot and Alice go on a trip and Fen, Josh and Margo fight and fight some more. Here are the 5 best moments from The Magicians 5×03!

Margo, the fighter. In order to lift the banishment and re-enter Fillory, Margo enters a Centurion battle (and Fen enters just for fun). Apparently, in the absence of Margo, the progressive ways of Fillory kinda fell off and only one woman can be on the guard. In order to decide, Margo and Fen have to fight on the night that happens to be a double full moon. This obvs won’t work for Margo because of her werewolf STD – and (gasp) Fen has the same problem. And that’s how we find out that Fen and Josh had a (dozen) hook-ups. Not cool.

Go tell it on the mountain. On the journey to drop Q’s ashes in the mountain that opens to the underworld, Alice keeps referring to Q as her boyfriend and we can see how it stings Eliot every single time she says it. Eliot and Quentin’s connection spanned a lifetime and it’s impossible to explain the bond that they shared after that. They may not have remembered every detail of their life together, but the love remained – and it’s still haunting Eliot that he dismissed Q and then never got to speak to him after he was possessed. Alice and Eliot finally talking about Eliot’s feelings for Q is such a beautiful and overdue moment.

Margo’s truth. Margo didn’t save Fen and Josh – Eliot did. And Margo didn’t reach for child’s play knife in her battle with Fen – she went for the kill. As Fen begs for forgiveness for sleeping with Josh, Margo let’s her know that she is NOT worthy of Fen’s apologies because she was going to let them die for Fillory and thought she killed her. Things are already so much more complicated.

Grief. This isn’t a specific moment, but more a reflection on many moments during this episode and Season 5 so far. This show’s handling of the grief surrounding Quentin’s death is so good. Alice goes into a dark depression, Eliot refuses to face it (until now) and Jules uses it to motivate her to save the world that her best friend died to protect. They are all okay ways to grieve and it’s refreshing that this show is allowing these characters spend this time healing in the way that works for them.

Dark King. So that handsome stranger on the mountain that saved (and almost hooked up) with Eliot is THE DARK KING! Welp, that will complicate things.
