The Magicians 5×01 recap: Season 5, Episode 01, “The Trap,” Aired Jan. 16, 2020
Our favorite magic peeps are back, but things are not okay! Season 4 ended with complete devastation and, to be honest, we are still recovering. It’s been one month since Q died, but his loss is still in the front of everyone’s mind. Here are the biggest takeaways from The Magicians 5×01 as we begin this sure to be amazing season.
The Unshackling. Margo and Eliot were zapped 300 years into Fillory’s future with zero clue about what happened. Lucky for them, in the castle there is a super entertaining play explaining what they missed! Not only does the play catch us all up on the Fillory happenings, it reminds us (yet again) that the glory days of Fillory and the Children of Earth are over.
It’s okay not to be fine. Eliot can say he’s fine all he wants, but we all know it can’t possibly be true. As Margo points out, he was used by a murderous monster and then his close friend died. And Margo is having her own troubles. Not only does she learn that Josh has been dead for 300 years, now she is locked in a jail cell with his ghost. EVERYONE NEEDS A VACATION!
Julia chooses her own quest. A pig (who is a legit pig in all senses of the word) comes to see Q for a world saving quest, but he’s not an option this time, obvi. The Pig refuses to entertain the idea of Julia taking the quest, so instead of letting this pig decide what she will do, Julia decides that this quest is exactly the thing she has been waiting for. She is going to hunt down the cause of the apocalypse.
Magic is fucked. Magic is back, but it’s out of control. There are all kinds of surges, the Hedge Witches are in some shiz, and time is loopy. This is going to get messy, ya’ll.
Alice does something crazy. Talking to the dead is not an easy thing, even for a Magician, and that’s why Alice shoots down Julia when she wants to. But that doesn’t really stop Alice because she decides to give it a go anyway. She is still struggling with her grief and at the suggestion of her mother, she decides to do something crazy…
