5 of the best video game film adaptations

Video games are just as popular in the entertainment world as movies, so, the two combining is no surprise. Over the years we’ve seen some fantastic games hit various devices, and a few them have gone on to make it on the big screen as a result. Here’s our pick of five of the best.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil was one of the first to kick start the video game movie trend and is by far one of the most popular and best-loved game series of all time. The franchise has been going since 1996 and is renowned for its horror, blood and gore. The first Resident Evil film hit the cinema in 2002, and since then there have been another five releases.

Pokémon

Pokémon took the world by storm over twenty years ago when it debuted on Gameboy. Most gamers will have played Pokémon Red and Blue at some point, and since then, there have been multiple instalments across multiple devices. Pokémon, inspired by anime, also made it on television, and, of course, the big screen. It’s a franchise people can’t get enough of, and after somewhat of a late revival, Detective Pikachu hit the big screen and was well received.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is a game series that has been around decades. This character has been the inspiration across several digital platforms, including a Microgaming slot game which can be found at RoyalVegas casino to a roller coaster ride at Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan.

With regards to game titles, we’ve seen Lara Croft star in eighteen hits so far, with more to come. As a game based on adventure and discovery, and with such a compelling lead protagonist, it was only a matter of time before Tomb Raider made it onto the big screen. There have been three movies based on the game series so far: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, and Tomb Raider. The pick of the bunch is the latter, but, Tomb Raider 2 will drop in 2021, and it will be the biggest yet.

Hitman

Hitman came to game consoles in the era where stealth titles were trending. What better way is there to portray stealth than with a hitman? Hitman tells the story of Agent 47, who is a cloned contract killer. The basis of the game made it perfect for a film adaptation, and this duly came along in 2007. Hitman was then followed up by Hitman: Agent 47, eight years later, and both movies did high numbers at the box office. Hitman 2, the game, dropped onto console and PC in 2018, so could we possibly see another movie come our way in the future.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is an iconic name in the video game industry. Debuting in 1992, it transformed fighting games and was very much an innovator. The game series is still going strong today, 20-plus releases later, with the latest hitting the market earlier this year.

A game with legend status was always going to find itself in other areas of the media, and in 1995 the first Mortal Kombat movie hit the big screen. It was followed up by Mortal Kombat: Annihilation two years later. 2021 is the year penciled in for the eagerly anticipated Mortal Kombat reboot, with filming wrapping in December 2019.
