‘Batwoman’ review: 1×08 “A Mad Tea Party”

Batwoman review Season 1, Episode 8, “A Mad Tea Party” Aired Dec. 1, 2019.

“A Mad Tea Party” is a fitting choice for Batwoman‘s particular villain. And I admit the twist of the knife completely gutted us because it was given to Gotham’s resident Meredith Grey, Mary Hamilton.

Let’s get into it:

A Mad Tea Party

It’s rather evil, asking a mother and daughter to decide who gets to live. However, I feel Batwoman thought this would pack the same punch as Slade Wilson asking Oliver Queen to decide to choose between his mother and sister. We all know how that turned out, with a sword in a gut. Catherine refuses to take the antidote so Mary can live.

One thing that did surprise me was the paramedics didn’t come in time. Catherine did die.

However, the scene that was the most heartbreaking was not the Tea Party in itself. It was Mary confronting Kate in the aftermath.

She begins to talk about “all the horrible people that she saved”…. but she still couldn’t save her mom. And then Mary asks Kate if Alice is worth it.

If Kate didn’t walk out of that conversation feeling changed and angry for Mary, and angry at Alice, then I don’t know what would have been it. Mary is poised and rational as she explains that her mother died slowly and in pain. And how she didn’t deserve that.

But Kate does walk out changed, and this time she is in Mary’s corner… and I’m intrigued to see where that takes us.

Stray Musings:

  • I like that Sophie was honest with Tyler. And it’s for sure a bad sign when your wife says that she “might be” in love with you.
  • I do wish that this will-they-won’t-they would go on for longer though, but that’s not to say it won’t.
  • The Mary Hamilton defense squad needs t-shirts right?

A Crisis is coming, gear up on Dec. 8 to watch part 1 at 8 PM on The CW!
