‘Black Lightning’ 3×05: Top 3 moments from “Requiem for Tavon”

Fight for Tavon!

Black Lightning 3×05 recap: Season 3, Episode 05, “The Book of Occupation: Chapter Five: Requiem for Tavon,” Aired Nov. 11, 2019

In Black Lightning 3×05, Odell sends Painkiller after Blackbird, which leads to a fight scene with Anissa and Khalil; Henderson reveals that he has secretly been leading the insurgents all this time; and the kids at the school riot after Tavon’s death is revealed, which leads to Jefferson getting beaten to the ground by A.S.A. soldiers; Jen’s new friend turns out to be a secret meta; and more.

Lets breakdown the top 3 moments of 3×05 in more detail:

#1 Blackbird under threat from Odell

Odell wants to know the identity of Blackbird and have her captured so bad, he sets her up as Painkillers next target. To fire up the heat on Blackbird in the public, Henderson is forced to offer a $50K reward to anyone who has information on her. Well damn, things aren’t looking too great for Anissa. You’d think she would take things on the low since stakes are high right now. However, Jefferson convinces her to bring back Tavon to his parents as they have proved he is not a meta and they just miss him so much. Anissa warns Jefferson that it’s not a good idea, but goes ahead with it anyways.

Of COURSE Anissa was right to worry, as little did they all know, Painkiller was waiting for Blackbird at the Perimeter to attack her. Anissa warns her dad that things are bad and she needs help – as she tries desperately to fight him off and keep Tavon safe. However, Tavon gets hurt in the crossfire and gets poisoned with Painkillers toxins. Anissa gets Tavon back to her dad, but by this point it was too late. Sadly Tavon dies and there was nothing anyone could have done. Ughh, not another innocent life gone.

I really wanted Anissa to discover who Painkiller was during their fight scene – but I guess that will be revealed later on in the season. I wonder how everyone is going to react when they learn that Khalil is still alive.

Odell turns up to Anissa’s apartment while everything was going down with Painkiller, and thank god that Grace is a shapeshifter for this precise moment. Grace smartly transforms into Anissa while Odell suspiciously takes a look around and questions how she is very similar in build etc to Blackbird. Of course Grace denies everything and some how manages to convince Odell that his data was wrong anf that it could no way be Anissa. Let’s hope he stays convinced!

#2 Henderson secretly leading the insurgents

Many people of Freeland are frustrated lately over how their police chief (Henderson) had been doing nothing to protect them from the A.S.A. It truly looked like he had given up and was too scared to stand up to them. To the public, Henderson failed them all, but in reality Henderson had been secretly leading the insurgents. Wow, I’m shocked – not going to lie! I thought Henderson was spooked and didn’t want to deal with the consequences if he rose against the A.S.A.

Henderson believed it was time to let a few more people in on his secret, so picked up the Reverend and Two-Bits. He really caused a scene as he pretends to arrest them (but they didn’t know it was pretend) until he got them to a secure location and then revealed all. After the death of poor Tavon and Jefferson getting bet up by the police, Henderson knew there was enough anger for the people of Freeland to rally over. With the help from Blackbird too, the insurgents have enough manpower to take down the A.S.A, but will they succeed?

#3 Jen’s friend revealed to be a meta

I knew the show was focusing too much on the new kid, Brandon, for a reason. Jen was told to show him around school, and since then they have been on/off hanging out at school together. However, his secret is revealed after he notices that Jen indeed too has powers. As Jen’s energy builds up after watching her dad get bet up, Brandon grabs her hands and absorbs her powers. OMG, just like Peter Petrelli in Heroes. The main question now is: is Brandon a freind or an enemy? Time will soon tell …

Black Lightning airs Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.
