‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Questions we need answered in Season 4

Will June die next season?

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale ended recently, and now we have to wait until 2020 to see what happens next in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4. And after such a finale, we can only assume a lot will happen!

Indeed, this season might not have been a fan’s favorite, it still increased in quality with its latest episodes and left us with a lot to speculate about. For sure, Gilead won’t be pleased to see all of these children out of the country.

If we have a whole year before it airs, here are already a few questions we have for The Handmaid’s Tale season 4!

What will become of June?

The last image of the finale showed us June being carried by other handmaids after she got shot. If I don’t believe the showrunners will pull a How to Get Away with Murder and kill their main character, I do think she might have to face big consequences following what she did – aka. free all of these children out of Gilead.

Unless her act of courage and successful mission inspire the other Handmaids and Marthas to fight back for their rights. It could be interesting to see the impact this rescue will have on them.

Will Fred and Serena stay in prison?

One of the biggest shock for me this season was to see Fred and Serena being brought to Canada. Finally, they’re going to have to pay for their crimes! The fact that Serena herself planned this ambush with Mark Tuello was an even bigger surprise. It gave me some hope for her character.

Unfortunately, Fred decided to bring her down with him and reveal her secret. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them in season 4.

Will Gilead manage to take them out of prison? How will the rest of the world react to what Fred and Serena have to tell them about their country? Are we really on the verge of World War III? So many questions, and so much time to pass before we get an actual answer!

Will Commander Lawrence learn about what June did to his wife?

From the moment we met him in season 2, Commander Lawrence has been quite the “shady” character. He has done some good, but he also has done some (very) bad. It’s only by the end of this season that he showed a softer side of himself by helping June with her plan.

Their relationship has also grown a lot, but what will become of it if the Commander ever learns that June did check on his wife and purposefully left her to die? I don’t think he would forgive her so easily. Such a reveal could have a lot of consequences. June could lose a very important ally.

What about Nick?

One thing – or rather, one character – I really missed this season was Nick. The show did an amazing job of giving him a much bigger role than he originally has in the book during the past seasons. For me, his relationship with June is (was?) like a ray of sunshine in the middle of all of this darkness surrounding Gilead.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see much of him in season 3. We did learn more about his past, and how he apparently helped build Gilead, but we never got to hear his side of the story. So I hope we’ll have this resolved in season 4. And I hope we’ll get a Nick and June reunion so that they can talk over this issue, too!

Will we see more reunions between the rescued children and their families?

One of the most emotional scenes of the season 3 finale was to see this one little girl reunite with her father. Now that all of these children are out of Gilead, we can only think about what will happen to them. Will we see more of these reunions? Will their testimonies help the rest of the world see how awful a place Gilead actually is?

We can only hope this rescue will bring a lot of (positive) changes in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4!

Will June, Luke and Hannah ever reunite?

I know The Handmaid’s Tale is not a happy show. So I’m not expecting a happy resolution when it comes to an end. I guess it’ll rather be bittersweet.

But I won’t lie, seeing someone go out of Gilead with every season finale while June has to stay behind is a little frustrating. The show could still work well with her out for good. It could be very interesting to see her try to save the victims of Gilead from the outside as well as see her having to re-learn how to live the free life.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 won’t be out before next year. We have all the time to speculate then, after such a stressful and eventful season 3 finale!
