The Bold Type 3×08 “Revival” aired May 28th, 2019
Here we go! The episode that had me hiding behind a pillow, and made my cat refuse to look at the tv screen for half an hour. Brace yourselves, because things get really hella awkward at Scarlet this week!
The Adena Situation
We pick up the morning after (in more ways than one) last week’s final scene, with a lovely scene between Tia and Kat. As Tia walks off screen, Kat goes to check her notifications to find that Adena is back, biatches!
We cut to Kat having a conference with Sutton and Jane on what to do with this situation — should she attend Adena’s gallery opening? — and admits to tingering (relationship lingering via text) with Adena. Kat comes to the conclusion that she won’t go, simply for how awkward it would be, and because she’s enjoying how things are going with Tia.
This would be all swell and good, until later when while trying to find a suitable photographer for the Pamala Dolan spread, Oliver suggests they use Adena. Jane hesitates, but ultimately agrees that Adena would be the best woman for the job, assuming Kat won’t even be in the building at the time.
Unfortunately for my anxiety, Kat is in the building…and runs straight into Adena. While with Tia. I wish I could recap this scene, but honestly I buried myself so deeply behind a pillow that I’m not entirely sure what was said.
Kat has a breakdown in the fashion closet afterward with Jane and Sutton supporting her, and she admits she thought she was over Adena but it still hurts. As the ladies point out, Adena was Kat’s “first” so it’s gonna be hard — but Kat worries it’s more than that, that Adena may be her “Richard.” Sutton and Richard got back together after a while apart, what if that’s what’s meant to happen for Kadena?
Later, while doing the photoshoot for the Pamala Dolan story, Adena confides in Jane that she wishes she had a mentor like Jacqueline, because if she had, maybe she wouldn’t have made as many mistakes. Jane asks her what she means, and Adena admits that she realized it was a mistake for her to have left Kat.
After a lot of debating, Jane finally tells Kat what Adena told her, and the episode closes with Kat and Adena in a park having a much needed talk.
The Sewing Machine of Love
When work pressures start getting in the way of Sutton’s fashion classes and time to design her outfits, Richard buys her a sewing machine to help move things along a little quicker. But Sutton is aghast he would spend so much money for her, and asks him to return it.
He doesn’t immediately, instead brokering a list of costs between them, explaining how the sewing machine is really evening out the balance between them since Sutton pays for her groceries and half their meals at restaurants.
When Sutton still refuses, Richard informs her that it starting to feel like she doesn’t want him in the full picture. Sutton heads to Jane’s apartment to “stitch and bitch,” and gets some advice from both Jane and Alex from their respective points of views.
At the end of the episode, Sutton and a fellow lady at the design class congratulate each other on their successes, and the lady excuses herself when her boyfriend calls, quickly explaining that he helped her with the baby so she could work on her design.
Sutton watches with longing as she overhears one half of the conversation, and realizes (thank God) that she does want Richard’s help and support. Sutton returns home, and explains to him there’s a part of her afraid to depend on anyone because of how much her mother depended on her father’s child support checks, but decides she wants to let Richard in and have that support. And so, the sewing machine of love gets to stay.
The Pamala Dolan Exposé
Jane and Jacqueline are finally making headway on their investigative piece on the sadistic, elusive and abusive photographer Pamala Dolan — enough so that they now have a group of women willing to come forward with their stories.
While the women fear Pamala may discover what they’re doing and sue, Jacqueline assures them that once Pamala realizes how many there are coming forward, she won’t stand a chance.
Jacqueline is back in full gear this episode, mentoring these women and giving them the courage to speak out — much like she did back in the first season — even after the worst happens, and Dolan’s lawyers threaten a lawsuit after discovering their leaked emails.
Jane, however, seems to become more and more rattled as they move forward, especially when Jacqueline asks her to hurry with the story so that they can confront Pamala Dolan to get her comments on the record.
By the episode closes, the photos have been shot, and the article is near the finish line, and we all wait with baited breath for next week: will Kat win the election? What kind of consequences will follow the Pamala Dolan story? And what about Kadena?
