Shadowhunters Series Finale, 3×21, Season 3 Episode 21 “Alliance” and 3×22, Season 3, Episode 22 “All Good Things…” aired May 6, 2019
Welp, it’s over. At least this chapter is anyway…
One of the themes of this show has always been that love can conquer all, and that love will prevail. That was never more evident than in these final two episodes. Watching Magnus and Alec exchange wedding vows, Simon and Izzy finally giving in to the flirtation that we have been watching for the past three years, and Jace and Clary finding each other again – despite her losing her memory.
Despite it all, love won.
There was a lot going on in these episodes, so let’s just take a closer look at the endings.
It would have been great to see more of what Jonathan could do with his new god-like status, but even with the series being cut short, they really gave him room to spread his wings (literally). Jonathan was a powerhouse of emotion in Season 3B and he went out the only way he could have – and probably the only way he wanted to – at the hands of his beloved sister, Clary. RIP Jonathan and Jonathan’s cheekbones.
The reunion was amazing. The wedding was amazing. The flash forward to their new lives a year later – AMAZING. They had a rocky road in Season 3B, but Magnus and Alec ended the series together and that’s all we could have asked for. They are one of the most balanced, loving couples on TV and while we are sad to see their journey come to an end, we are so, so thankful that we got to watch their love story unfold over the last three years.
Simon and Izzy’s slow burn got a definite push in these last few episodes, but they managed to make it still feel natural, for the most part. It would have been great to see Izzy’s Heavenly Fire story carry out a little more. The angst of them finally getting together and then not being able to touch would have been interesting to watch for a little longer – but alas, there just wasn’t enough time. They ended the series together AND Izzy is the Head of the New York Institute! Love it.
Maia, Luke and what we wanted more of
It was so nice to see everyone settling into their new lives. Luke back as a Shadowhunter (we would have loved to see more of his story too) and Maia as an Alpha and restaurant owner. We finally learned Underhill’s name and even saw a spark with Lorenzo – great endings all around! It was also super nice to see some familiar faces at the Malec wedding.
Heline was a couple we would have liked to see so much more of. And nothing will ever dull the sting of not being able to see Izzy and Clary become parabatai, but there was only so much time.
Jace and Clary
This was so heartbreaking. After Clary’s huge sacrifice to save everyone from her brother, she lost her runes and her Shadowhunter memories. The entire sequence was so emotional. Clary walking out and having everything fade out as she slipped more and more into the Mundane life was breathtakingly beautiful. Clary was always able to draw herself out of any problem, but this time it took everything away.
We did have some questions about the logistics of all of that though. Like, why did she have that power if she wasn’t supposed to use it? Raziel kinda seems like a messy bitch who love drama, but whatevs.
Back to Clary. Even though we are super bummed that she forgot the Shadow World, it was great to see her happy. She was so tortured and broken after everything that happened with Jonathan. Wiping Clary’s memory sucked for the ones who she left behind, but it brought her some much needed peace.
Speaking of those that she left behind, let’s talk about Jace. If this show has taught us anything, it’s that Jace would never, ever give up on Clary and that he was never going to be able to move on. During the year after Clary left, he checked up on her because he simply had to know she was okay. She was living her best Mundane life and it was so refreshing to see her back in her art!
The series ended with such hope, despite the angst of it all because Clary remembered! Even though she wasn’t supposed to and even though the Angels were still punishing her, she remembered her true love. She even saw his runes! It’s not clear if this is just because of the bond they share or if her punishment is over, but it doesn’t really matter – she remembers!
The weight of the last three seasons no longer rest on Jace and Clary as they move into the next chapter of their lives and we are confident that given time, Clary will get her memories back. (At least that’s what we are choosing to believe.) But that’s the beauty of this ending. It’s open for interpretation!
Any ending of this show was going to hurt, but it’s wonderful that they ended things with love and hope. No matter what the villain, or how crazy things got, love was always this show’s greatest strength against the world – Shadow and Mundane alike. Love wins.
We will miss you, Shadowhunters. You are a true gem of a show and we are still holding out hope that you find a new home someday!
