Arrow recap: Season 7, Episode 19, “Spartan” Aired April 22, 2019.
Within the parameters of a Diggle-centric episode, we did the appropriate amount of squealing, of crying, of clapping, and saying “awwwww!” But what can you expect? It’s Diggle, and we love Diggle, but he rarely gets his moment in the Star City sun. Let’s jump right in:
Oliver and Diggle go to Diggle’s step-father General Stewart (*cough cough* Green Lantern reference) for help finding Emiko and the Ninth Circle.
And yes, we heard that correctly. We are finally getting Diggle’s backstory beyond, “my brother was killed and now he’s alive and evil, so I killed him to protect my wife and child.”
What Diggle has believed his whole life is that his father was a hero of an Op gone bad, and Wham! Then he had a step-father within six months.
What really happened was his father was negligent, and Stewart saved many lives because of his heroics. He let John hate him so he wouldn’t think badly about his father. That’s selfless love, right there. And it was heartwarming to see them make up.
Oliver, Diggle, and OTA
OTA moments weren’t really in your face this episode, but I felt them nonetheless. It’s like they are in on a secret, without being jerks about it. I felt it especially with Felicity and Oliver’s concern over John this episode when he was kidnapped.
Oh right! John was kidnapped with Stewart, and they electrocuted our love, John Diggle, so they must die. Kidding, kidding. But not really.
The Ninth Circle/Dante kidnapped John and General Stewart to get the codes to some super-classified bioweapon that can melt through anything. After Dante tortures John, Stewart gives up the codes.
After all of this, Oliver is a good friend and helps bring the truth of his father’s death to light so he can repair things with his step-father. This episode was full of quality Quiggle content for the brotp.
The team goes out to find Emiko and the Ninth Circle. When they find them, Oliver tells Emiko that Dante killed her mother, but of course she doesn’t believe him, and they fight.
There’s also a cool shot of Oliver’s arrow going through Emiko’s arrow. However, coolness aside, she get’s away. What’s surprising is Emiko kills Dante.
Yes, she did ultimately believe Oliver and killed Dante for revenge. What does this mean? Is Emiko now the leader of the Ninth Circle? Is she still mad at Oliver? Probably.
Felicity’s tech was stolen by the Ninth Circle right when she was going to get a huge meeting with some robotics genius. That must have been frustrating.
And because of this, she realizes that ARCHER can be used for both good and evil, so she has a choice to make. Destroy ARCHER and start over, or keep it.
Felicity does the hard thing, which was the right thing, and destroys ARCHER. Alena has some opinions about this, and we get hints that Alena may be the cause for ARCHER surveilling the city in the future.
The child of Olicity and the child of Dyla have definite vibes and chemistry. AND I AM HERE FOR IT SIGN ME UP!
And in this Diggle-centric episode, we learn more about our already beloved Connor Hawke. We learn that JJ is a member of an evil organization called “Deathstroke,” and Connor working for ARGUS, so naturally he has a problem with that.
Evil brother vs. good brother? SmoakNHawke vibes and chemistry? Fodder for a spinoff if you ask me.
