‘The Bold Type’ 3×02: Spoiler free review “Plus It Up”

Jane might be wishing it weren't so, but we aren't

The Bold Type 3×02, Season 3, Episode 2 spoiler free review, airs April 16, 2019

Last week’s episode may have had us all weeping and reaching for the Kleenex, but “Plus It Up” promises an hour of hilarity, awkward situations, and glee aplenty! And in some true The Bold Type fashion, some gloriously OMG moments of shock and cuteness overload – and some truly stand out performances and revelations.

Sloan and Pinstripe

THE BOLD TYPE – “Plus It Up” – Jane begins her fertility treatments in preparation for freezing her eggs and is assigned an article to write about her experience, but with a very personal twist. Kat learns that a prominent lesbian bar is being closed down and replaced with condos and decides to throw a Queer Prom to fundraise its rescue. Sutton moves in with Richard but struggles to accept his help when Oliver’s mysterious absences force her to put in more hours at work. This episode of “The Bold Type” airs April 16 (8:00-9:01 P.M. EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/Philippe Bosse)
KATIE STEVENS, DAN JEANNOTTE

The episode follows Jane as she begins her egg freezing process, but is reluctant to let Pinstripe in on the experience, and for the most part, she’s somewhat successful – until Patrick helpfully suggests she and Pinstripe write an article together about it. Yikesaroni.

At times the situational humor to this storyline hits the mark, but it definitely had me cringing and wanting to run far, far away on Jane’s behalf. I pity those who easily get second hand embarrassment who have to watch in real time, unable to walk off the anxiety (like I did) by pausing.

Buuuut, the episode really helps flesh out a sweeter side of Pinstripe, and I’m enjoying where they’re taking his characterization this season (and he isn’t the only one, more on that later!), and this episode really solidified for me why he’s the perfect match for Jane. By the end of the episode, I was internally cartwheeling and screaming OTP over and over.

And Employee of the Month goes to…

In the Sutton department of things, hold onto your Suttard shipping hats because boy does this episode deliver in terms of fluff. Sutton struggles to keep her private couple life and work life separate, but moving in with Richard makes everything more complicated – especially when she starts having to work extra hours..

And like I said, Pinstripe isn’t the only boyfriend we see a new side of. The season sees a much more chill, fun Richard than in previous seasons, and I. Am. Here. For. It. We get a great glimpse at his friendship with Jane and Kat too, that makes my heart swell with joy. This episode truly blessed us with the found family content, and I’m so glad for it.

Kat definitely soars in this episode, and after last week’s sobbing fest, it’s fantastic to see her on a roll again. Sadly, I can’t go much into detail on Kat’s portion (spoilers), but let’s just say the episode shows a Kat we all know and love – determined to make a difference, no matter what.

I think this is probably my favorite episode of the Bold Type so far, because it has so much humor, and it’s just fun from start to finish. Also, a thought I had watching was that it’s fun watching this show because the question we always have is how are the ladies going to fix this? Not if they can. It’s a refreshingly optimistic take, which is another reason I think this show is so special. It isn’t afraid to tackle hard real world subjects, but it never loses its optimism.

Ugh, I can’t wait for you all to watch this episode. It’s fantastic! Prepare to laugh your butts off, everyone!

In the intervening years, I've fallen deep into the well of fandom with no expectation or wish to leave it. I have a profound love for gothic and spooky tales, and that one movie franchise with the laser swords, dunno if you've heard of it.
