Celebrating your favorite ‘Arrow’ and Olicity fan fictions

Amongst the devastating news of Emily Bett Rickards’ departure from Arrow ahead of its eighth and final season, I thought an Olicity fan fiction list was in order.

Not because I am naive enough to think that this list will replace the joy of seeing Mrs. Felicity Smoak on your TV screens every week, but because fan fictions let our minds roam free into every possibility. And a world full of possibilities sounds pretty good next to the fact of a Felicity-less season 8.

And the intimate nature of television calls for an intimate (and sometimes smutty) fic. Because falling in love with a character is intimate. Falling in love with a story, and falling in love with the relationships is not something so easily done. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said “yeah, I don’t care” and changed the channel.

Felicity Smoak means A LOT to A LOT of people. And that’s just me simplifying it. However, isn’t it fitting that a non-comic book couple (on a show based on a comic book) garners so much love and adoration through fan fiction?

Because we all dabble in diverging canon. Whether if its writing 50 chapters of Olicity as secret agents, or if it’s simply thinking “you know what will be cute, if they were holding hands right now.” Even rebooting a new issue of a comic book is a divergence from what is considered to be canon. And then that also becomes canon.

Let’s be real, Olicity is basically (and Arrow as a whole) just another iteration of the Green Arrow comic book. Canon isn’t rigid in that sense. And acting like it is, is frankly just no fun.

So, ergo, fan fiction. And I’m comfortable with that comparison.

Icing on the Cake

He Deserves a Shot (At Being Happy)

Summary: Tommy Merlyn has spent most of his life being an expensive disappointment to his family, but now he’s a part-owner of a semi-successful nightclub in the worst area of town (it’s seriously looking up) alongside his best friend, who — after five years on a deserted island — decided to come back to be a freaking vigilante. It’s a long story, one that’s longer than Tommy wants to remember, but it took the Glades collapsing and the death of one of their best friends to get him officially done with being a troublemaker. Nothing interesting. Just running a nightclub, and trying not to get into any trouble.

Oliver’s been gone god knows where for most of the summer, which means he’s stuck being the big brother to the guy’s snarky little sister, whose boyfriend “Ron” seems completely set on getting himself killed. An afternoon of test-driving Verdant’s new cocktails gets interesting when Felicity Smoak and John Diggle show up asking (more) questions about where to find Oliver, and Tommy has to decide whether he wants to keep his new rule. Spoiler alert: he doesn’t.

Technical Assistance

Smoak planned to get married on Saturday to former playboy Oliver Queen, who launched a failed bid for the mayor’s office last year. According to SCPD spokeswoman Sameena Patel, Queen has been cooperating with investigators. “There’s not a worry about” his possible involvement in her disappearance, Patel said.

Queen is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Smoak. Anyone with information is urged to call the FBI hotline for the investigation at 1-877-555-1950.
