What an emotional thrill ride! “A Kiss from a Rose” took us through every emotion possible with hardly any time to breathe. So basically, Clary’s finally going on a special date with Jace (of course shit happens, who’s surprised?), Izzy and Alec are conspiring to find out more about the brewing Clave conspiracy, Magnus goes to Lorenzo to get his magic back, and Maia’s still trapped with her ex at the Jade Wolf.
Steel your nerves and get those tissues ready as we dive deeper into the episode!
Clary making out with Jonathan…. Wait – what???
The episode starts and we’re like: “What? No way! Clary girl, what are you doing?” Then: Oh, the relief! Jonathan having a fake Clary at his beck and call? Super creepy, but it only confirms what we already know: Dear demon brother’s feelings aren’t as brotherly as they are supposed to be!
A bloody nightmare: The aftermath of the Jade Wolf massacre
The Jade Wolf has been turned into a graveyard. Mutilated corpses are all over the floor and there is blood everywhere – a nightmare! These pictures belong to the most violent ever seen on the show. Still trapped inside a storage room with Jordan, Maia’s terror is palpable. There’s no cellphone-service and the Jade Wolf is closed on Mondays – so no one is looking for them. On top of that, Maia’s claustrophobic. Can things get any worse? You bet they can!
On the plus side: Being locked in a small room with no way out makes it impossible for the ex couple to avoid their mutual issues. They finally talk about their past and in a key emotional moment, Maia forgives Jordan.
Oh, poor Luke…
Thanks to Simon and Luke, they later make it out (barely) alive. Confronted with the dead bodies of his pack, Luke is devastated. You can literally see him questioning himself: Would the massacre still have happened if he hadn’t stepped down as alpha? We’re heart-broken for him!
Clace: The morning after and a special date
When we next see Clary’s face, it’s the real one. We get a super soft, real tender “morning after” scene where Jace reveals his more vulnerable side to Clary. The way he smiles and looks away briefly while admitting to feeling “a little” insecure is definitely cute. And we all feel like shrieking “YES! Finally” when he proposes a special date to celebrate Clary’s return.
He takes her ice-skating to recreate a happy childhood memory for her and it’s the most romantic and thoughtful thing ever! Seeing Jace stumble his way across the ice is just adorable, as is the way he persists: “It’s not me, it’s the skates.” And Clary offering to “kiss it better” when he falls? Too perfect for words.
Of course it cannot last. When Jace wanders off to find new skates, he’s ambushed by Jonathan who leaves him gagged and bound before transforming himself into Jace. Once he gets back to Clary, the poor girl doesn’t suspect a thing.
Head of the Institute Alec and pathologist Izzy? Hell yes!
Meanwhile in Alec’s office, Alec talks to Luke about the Morgenstar sword when Izzy enters. She still can’t get the murdered Clave guard’s “Inside” hint out of her head and wants to do an autopsy on him. Alec reluctantly allows her 24 hours before he reports back to the Clave. Authoritative Head of the Institute Alec? Competent pathologist Izzy? Give us more!!!
Can somebody just punch Lorenzo? Thank you!
When Magnus steps into Lorenzo’s mansion, we instinctively know: This is so not good! Magnus, honey, what are you doing? Please, it’s so not worth it! Magnus, however, feels differently. The fact that he chooses to let himself be humiliated by Lorenzo tells us just how desperate and lost the warlock feels without his magic.
In what is an agonizing scene to bear, we witness a smug Lorenzo asking Magnus to grovel and beg, and see Magnus follow suit, even promising the current High Warlock anything (material) he wants. While our heart cries out for Magnus, we’re also so proud of him because despite everything, he’s still standing brave and tall.
Kicking a man down who’s already on the ground? Despicable and certainly not the actions of a High Warlock! But what’s remarkable is that even with the power imbalance between them, it’s plain to see who is the bigger man.
As to Lorenzo’s infusion of magic: Can it be that easy? Is it really Magnus’ magic? It’s all yellow and that is just SO WRONG! Our worst fears come true when Magnus later gets a nosebleed when opening a portal! Not good at all!
That Alec-Magnus-Underhill scene? It happened!
More Alec-Underhill interaction and Magnus finally meeting Underhill in person? It finally happened! It’s just a short scene of the three of them together, but it’s a good one! More Underhill, please! Magnus casually reveals he’s able to do magic again and pays no heed to the men’s confused expressions. Yay for Alec asking the important questions: “Lorenzo, why would he help you?” Yes, why indeed? So Alec is concerned, Magnus is dismissive and it all just feels so wrong.
Clary date-abducted by Jonathan posing as Jace
When Clary opens up about Jonathan’s little “I miss you” message and the kidnapping, Jonathan-Jace replies: “I can’t really blame him for being crazy about you. […] He did it out of love.” Of course Clary’s face is all question marks. We’re pretty lucky Jonathan is so very much incapable of understanding human emotions, because that’s Clary’s first clue that something is wrong. The second one is the kiss they share.
After what feels like an eternity, everyone comes to Clary’s rescue and she has Jonathan pinned down. For a brief second, we get a glimpse of her eyes going all demony black and she lets Jonathan escape. What the hell happened? Everyone’s confused, and so is Clary.
Once reunited with the “real” Jace, we get the (only slightly shortened) epic Clace book quote we’ve all been waiting for and it’s absolutely swoon-worthy:
Jace: I swear on the Angel. I swear on us.
Clary: Why us?
Jace: Because there isn’t anything I believe in more.
Malec: Grave-robbing in Belgium
Not exactly our idea of a romantic trip: Following a hint about the Morningstar sword, the power couple finds a replica with a telling inscription: Apparently, if Jonathan got his hands on the real thing, he would be able to summon an army of demons from hell. Oh oh…
Protective Alec to the rescue!
Alec is as livid as we are when learning Lorenzo demanded Magnus’ loft for restoring his magic: “I’ll kill him”, is his first response, and while we are all like: “Please do”, Magnus stops him. In a very gripping scene that nearly had us sobbing, he explains what his magic means to him:
Magic connects me to everything around me. Without magic, I feel like a stranger. The world keeps on going, and it’s like I’m not a part of it. Like suddenly I don’t matter.
It’s so very Alec not to heed his partner’s words and confront Lorenzo nevertheless. Alec is super-confident and his thinly veiled threads make it clear that he is waiting to bring Lorenzo down the first chance he gets. Also, the way he deliberately pauses before calling Lorenzo a “leader” is everything! We stan one Alec Lightwood!
What’s going on with Clary? And what’s happening with Luke? How will Alec and Magnus cope with the aftermath of going behind each other’s backs? What’s on the chip Izzy found during her autopsy? Looks like even more angst is on its way!
