Excellent news, Shadowfam! We’re three episodes into season 3b and so far, ratings look pretty good. Particularly so in Germany, where Constantin Film, the production company of Shadowhunters, has its headquarters.
Ratings in Germany exceed all expectations
As quotenmeter.de, a German media magazine covering everything in relation to TV and movies, reported yesterday, Shadowhunters experienced a major boost in popularity:
Right in the middle of its third and final season, Shadowhunters – The Mortal Instruments jumped to number four of our ranking. According to our partner Goldmedia, 5.76 million fans watched the Constantin Film production. This means Shadowhunters beats ‘The Walking Dead’, as the survival series was only watched by 4.10 million zombie fans.
The relevance of those numbers becomes even more clear when you compare them to last year’s viewing numbers. As you can see, only 1.46 million viewers watched the show in April 2018. Consequently, the GLAAD-winning show has gained more than 4 million viewers since then.
The fans’ efforts bear fruit
This is quite remarkable, especially considering that Shadowhunters has been on an eight-month hiatus. Moreover, since its sudden mid-season cancellation in June 2018, the series received little to no official promotion. Keep in mind that these are just the viewing numbers for Germany alone! For more than nine months now, fans have worked tirelessly in an effort to promote and save the show. Their #SaveShadowhunters campaign has been called the largest one in the history of TV.
The cast shows their appreciation
It also needs to be mentioned how supportive the cast has been every step along the way. They promoted the fan-sponsored billboards (find our coverage of it here), donated to the fundraisers and generally helped everybody to maintain a positive attitude. Recently, they even dedicated a bench in Central Park to the Shadowhunters fandom.
Fans take the #SaveShadowhunters campaign to Munich, Germany
Obviously, the fight to #SaveShadowhunters is far from over! On March 15, another poster promoting the show went up in Munich, Germany. Organized by the German fan group @notsilentsis and paid for by fans, it can be found close to Constantin Film’s headquarters. Located right in the heart of the subway station “Marienplatz”, the group could not have chosen a more perfect location, as “Marienplatz” is one of the most frequented and busiest subway stations in the city.
The huge poster was designed by @CommanderApril1. It cleverly combines the skylines of New York and Paris—an amazing idea! The caption reads: “What are you willing to risk to save the world?”
We’re pumped to find out whether the #SaveShadowhunters campaign will finally bear fruits. After all, fans cannot be any louder than they have been in previous months and viewing numbers show that their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Fans, cast, crew, and critics alike agree that the recent season is the best to date, exploring more mature themes and delving more deeply into characters than ever before. It would be a pity to see so much potential go to waste. After all, there are so many more stories to be told!
