The CW’s ‘Nancy Drew’ pilot finds its Carson Drew

He really is "all that."

In an exciting turn of events today, Entertainment Weekly broke the news that Freddie Prinze, Jr. has been cast to play Carson Drew in the CW’s Nancy Drew pilot!

Carson Drew was always an avid supporter of Nancy in the books, but it seems trouble is brewing between the esteemed attorney and his daughter, as the report states “[he] has become estranged from Nancy following the recent death of his beloved wife — but his attempts to reconnect with his daughter run aground when Nancy’s murder investigation reveals unsettling secrets from Carson’s own past.”

The pilot is to follow Nancy Drew (Kennedy McMann) in the summer following her high school graduation, as a family tragedy holds her back from moving on to college, and – as it so often goes for our favorite girl detective – she’s soon caught up in a murder investigation!

Already, this sounds like an interesting and much darker take on the Nancy Drew lore (especially when you compare these descriptions to the Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase film, starting “It” actress Sophie Lillis).

I’m so excited to see Freddie Prinze, Jr. portraying Carson. If anything’s to go by his phenomenal portrayal of Kanan Jarrus on Star Wars Rebels, he’s definitely capable of playing a father figure with a dark past – and I’m excited to see how this pilot plays out (may it get picked up for series), though since the CW is no stranger to murder, mystery and mayhem (Riverdale), I think it’s in the right hands.

The pilot is to be directed by Larry Teng, with executive producers Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Noga Landau, and Melinda Hsu Taylor on board as well.

I've had a lifelong adoration of fiction, stemming from family movie nights, piles of books to consume, and comic book store trips. In the intervening years, I've fallen deep into the well of fandom with no expectation or wish to leave it. I have a profound love for gothic and spooky tales, and that one movie franchise with the laser swords, dunno if you've heard of it.
