Welcome back, Shadowfam, for the latest part of our #ShadowhuntersPosterChallenge appreciation series. Today’s post will be Malec-centric. But before we give Magnus and Alexander’s unusual love story our undivided attention, we’d like to once again emphasize that for us, the beauty of Shadowhunters is that there is something for everybody: We have the epically tragic ship of Clace, the magic of Malec and the promise of Sizzy.

Additionally, from the looks of it, season 3b will give us another brand new ship to be excited about: Aline Penhallow (from season 2: Eileen Li, 3b: Jacky Lai) and Helen Blackthorn (Sydney Meyer), known as Heline. Every ship is equally valid, and that’s the beauty of it.
Shadowhunters: Once again a GLAAD Award Nominee
A couple of days ago,the GLAAD Media Awards released their list of this year’s nominees. It comes as no surprise that our show is once again included in the category “Outstanding Drama Series”. The Awards “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.” Shadowhunters already won a GLAAD Award in 2017.
Aisling McDermott, a GLAAD Campus Ambassador Alum, explains why Shadowhunters has become important for so many of us:
The representation in Shadowhunters isn’t just representation of race, of gender, or of sexuality: It’s a representation of intersectionality. The characters in Shadowhunters already have so much life to them and their identities just add other dimensions. It’s a show where all types of sexualities and examples of gender expression will not only be represented but also normalized and accepted. It’s possible to be bisexual and East Asian, it’s possible to be Latinx and asexual, it’s possible to be a tough, femme cop while also being in a relationship with a girl. The show proves it’s possible to live your life and be more than your labels, and that is why I stan Shadowhunters.
Reacting to the GLAAD nomination, Twitter user Karen summarizes what so many fans keenly feel:
Naturally, Shadowhunters fans were quick to include this nomination in their artwork. They also regularly show their support of the positive representation in the show by donating to charity organizations such as The Trevor Project.
The magic of Malec: Polar opposites end up being soulmates
It’s hard to describe the magic of Malec. Seldom has a couple had such an impact on viewers, infiltrating their lives even beyond the television screen.
On the outside, Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alexander Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) are poster boys for the idiom “Opposites attract. A “freewheeling bisexual,” centuries-old warlock and a young, closeted Shadowhunter. A half-demon and and an angel. An outgoing, confident-as-can-be personality and an insecure, sometimes socially awkward character. Extrovert and introvert.
It is love at first sight. Their eyes meet and the chemistry is there right from the start. It’s magic to watch. But of course nothing good ever comes easy. As the Head of the New York Institute and the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Alec and Magnus aren’t just a bit different – they are polar opposites.
Furthermore, they are supposed to be arch enemies. After all, who has ever heard of a nephilim falling for a warlock? And to make matters even worse, one of the same sex nevertheless? It is unheard of and just not done – at least that’s what the bigoted Clave claims.
Love conquers all
But in the end, the heart wants what the heart wants. Pursuing what both men yearn for is not easy and means a lot of struggle and setbacks. There are obstacles and outdated conventions to overcome. But in the end, love conquers all (yes!). Both men are characters in their own right. But together they are one hell of a power couple.
The Status Quo
Season 3’s midseason finale left us shaken. Who are we kidding, it even felt like a kick in the guts: Alec on the ground with an arrow embedded in his chest, Magnus without his magic. How will their story continue? This is what showrunner Todd Sklavin said when asked to describe Malec in 3B in three words:
In less than thirty days, we’ll find out how Malec’s story continues. But whatever lies ahead, we feel confident that these two strong characters can overcome any obstacle the way they have always done: Together.
Let’s finish our post with two posters depicting the hope for a happy, domestic Malec future.
Heartwarming! Coming up next in our #ShadowhuntersPosterChallenge appreciation series, we will take a look at Team Evil. As always, head over to Twitter to check out more incredible Shadowhunters posters!
Shadowhunters returns on 25 February on Freeform and Hulu.
