Here is the synopsis:
For seven years a certain boy wizard went to Wizard School. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of The Puffs… who just happened to be there too. This is a play for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic is a Potter inspired comedy for anyone who has ever felt like a secondary character in someone else’s story. The play gives you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three new heroes just trying to make it through magic school.

We asked playwright, Matt Cox about the show!
What was the inspiration behind this project?
Matt Cox: Sometime way back in the day, 2015, I was sitting on a 1 train in NYC on my way somewhere (as one often is on the subway.) My first play was finally in the swing of things, a geek opus called “Kapow-i GoGo” which was a four and a half hour extravaganza with lots of Dragon Ball Z, Star Wars, Terminator, Final Fantasy Jokes and more. My mind drifted to what could be a fun next project to tackle when I had the initial idea for Puffs. That initial concept being: Wow, wouldn’t it have been kind of terrible to be another kid at magic school during a certain famous boy wizards tenure. The horror increasing every year alongside his daring adventures, but our heroes would just be a bunch of kids who want a wizard education, and were unfortunate enough to go to this school during the glory days of the 1990s.
It was a quick leap immediately that the play should center on The Puffs, whom for too long pop culture had deemed the not-so-cool kids of this particular wizard school. Expanding on a version of their story, where they get to be the focus for once seemed like a gold mine for comedy, and ultimately lots of heart too. A lot of the story of Puffs was even influenced by my own time being a not-so-cool kid in school, and I think there’s a lot many people can relate to there.

What is the message you hope people will get from Puffs?
MC: We say the show is “a play for anyone never destined to save the world.” It is a celebration of the underdog, and of anyone who has maybe never felt like the hero of their own story. A big part of the play deals with the idea that, despite those feelings there is definitely a story out there all about each of us- just as full of magic and wonder as any other.
There’s also an ongoing theme of failure, and how it too should be celebrated- as the best strides and greatest lessons that shape the people we become come from those failures (and perhaps not from a decision made by a hat.) A message we share with Yoda in The Last Jedi, but we got there first.
