Part of my delight in this obsession is finding anime quotes with tidbits of wisdom. There are incalculable lessons within these moments, episodes, seasons, and series. Yet, it doesn’t take a philosopher to see that the creators intend for the viewers to take something away. Whether it is through the actions or words or results, there are lessons for all of us to learn.
It might be a flaw of mine but my fascination with quotes goes back 20 years. I would do a lot of my communication through quotations. I believe there is an untold power in words. That is to say, the words we use mean something that most people do not (or cannot) understand. I think that is why I concentrate on the things people say. It is true of the meaning found in quotations as well. Let me share a few of these anime quotes that speak to me in hopes that you’ll also enjoy them.
Spoiler: There should be minimal spoilers here. Mainly I want to focus on what the quotes mean to me. However, there is some context to set up, but I’ll make it as vague as I can.
Anime quotes – Be bold
“The thing about words…Say them out loud, and I think they start to come true.” – Airi Katagiri
This is a form of a visualization technique that I attempt to practice in my daily life. It isn’t enough to keep your thoughts and plans and emotions bottled up. Things start to happen when you make your plans known to the universe. I suppose it sounds a little cheesy, but I think it works. Saying things out loud makes it more real for me. It is an element of boldness even if it’s just my dogs that hear me.
Anime quotes – One friend is all you need
“Man, kids these days. They think it’s a competition to have the most friends. One is enough. Find someone completely unique. Just find that one, irreplaceable someone.” – Yato
Let me tag on a bit of reality to this one. It becomes harder to make friends after you leave the social atmosphere of school (high school or college). Peoples’ lives become more demanding; your life becomes about being an “adult”. Make a friend you can depend on while the opportunity to do so is ample. I’m so lucky to have a best friend with a unique trait. Her presence attracts more good people into my life.
Anime quotes – Live with variety
“It is important to draw wisdom from different places. If you take it only from one place it becomes rigid and stale.” – Iroh
They say that variety is the spice of life. Pretty timely advice too since I am loving Food Wars. This piece of anime wisdom can be useful in so many different areas. I take it to mean to be open to everything and take the portions that can help you evolve. Even though my philosophy of life is a blend it’d be a mistake for anyone to adopt it without being willing to add/subtract more.
Anime quotes – Categorizing humanity
“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” – Izaya
Part of that philosophy that I subscribe to accepts that people are both good and bad. It is impossible to eliminate all the good or all the bad from an individual person. Izaya is a master of people watching. He enjoys manipulating those he finds charming or tedious. It is his game. But we aren’t all like Izaya, trying to deploy a deep strategy using people as pieces…we are both good and bad. Let us be charming to one another and minimize the tediousness.
Anime quotes – I love you
“I want to know what “I love you” means…” – Violet Evergarden
My fixation on quotes goes back to one in particular: “To say ‘I love you’ one must first know how to say the ‘I’.” Having an identity and being true to the I was so central to my development. It even ties back to the thinking of being open to trying new things and integrating them into my life aesthetics. Investigating love might be even more complex than the examination of my ‘I’. Love can be so many things but for me it is 1) a willingness to die to keep someone else safe, 2) unable to picture my life without someone’s presence, 3) never abandoning those precious to me, and 4) always supporting, never hindering someone’s goal.
Quotes can be something so vague or general that they apply in a myriad of situations. Yet they speak to us on a deeply personal level. It is my hope that some of these personal ruminations will reach you. Do you have any quotes from anime that are special to you? Please share them here or let’s have a discussion on my social media (Facebook – Twitter – Instagram)! It’d mean a lot to me to hear what motivates, inspires, or makes you think.
