The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter is upon us, and I cannot believe it’s been that long. These books (and films) have touched the lives of so many people. The character that touched me the most was Hermione Granger. The incredibly smart, sassy, and bold girl was the epitome of everything I wanted to be. Hermione has often been called the true hero of the series, and I’m inclined to agree. There are many instances where the boys would have died if it wasn’t for her. Here are five instances where she saved their butts.

The Devil’s Snare
In the first of the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Devil’s Snare was placed as a deterrent to get to the stone. Ron, Harry, and Hermione were all caught in the plant as they were trying to get to the stone. Hermione was the only one to recognize what it was and remember the poem that Devil’s Snare hates light. If it wasn’t for her, the two of them would still be in the snare.
The Basilisk
You want to talk about being a BA, let’s talk about how Hermione saved the day WHILE petrified. She had deduced what the creature was and was smart enough to carry around a mirror, so it wouldn’t be able to kill her. She also came up with the idea that it was traveling though the pipes. It is because of her that Ron and Harry find the chamber and face the basilisk.
Dumbledore’s Army
In the fifth year, it’s Hermione who starts the army, convincing Harry to teach everyone spells to protect them. She thinks ahead, enchanting the paper to reveal anyone who reveals their secret. She’s also the one that comes up with the idea of the coins to let the members know when there was a meeting. It’s also Hermione that tells Harry to contact the Order of the Phoenix to make sure they’re not walking into a trap without backup.
Quick thinking with Umbridge
Hermione is also the one who keeps Umbridge from using the Cruciatus curse on Harry by making up a story to lead her into the Forbidden Forest. Only Hermione could come up with such a brilliant plan right on the spot. She tells Umbridge, using surprisingly good acting skills, that the army was making a weapon for Dumbledore that was hidden in the Forbidden Forest. The plan worked perfectly with Umbridge walking right into the forest and being dragged off by a herd of centaurs. This saved Harry from a terrible curse that could have permanently damaged him.
The Deathly Hollows
While searching for the Horcruxes, Hermione saves Harry so many times, it was hard to choose one. She enchants their campsite to protect them from Death Eaters. She saves Harry from Nagini who was disguised as Bathilda. She’s also the one that comes up with all the smart ideas—going to see Mr. Lovegood, packing a bag of items for the wedding, and bringing them to a forest only she would know. When Harry accidentally says Voldemort’s name (or in the movie, Mr. Lovegood says it to save Luna), a group of Snatchers chases after them. It’s Hermione’s quick thinking in jinxing Harry’s face that allows them to hide their identity long enough for them to escape.
Obviously, there are plenty more times that Hermione saved Harry and Ron, but I think these five are the most important. Long story short, Hermione is a boss.
