This isn’t the first time the beloved time traveling show has faced cancellation, but this one seems a little more lasting than before. Last year, NBC decided not to pick up the show for it’s second season, but changed their minds after fan outcry. It’s a TV tale we see all the time these days and it’s because big networks don’t understand the way genre shows work.
As is the case with most unique, genre shows, Timeless has a modest (steady) ratings and a hugely passionate fan base. And also like many shows that aren’t procedural or emotional family dramas, the network pulled the plug too soon. The outrage is real and the frustration of fans is understandable. A show in this genre is never going to boast the numbers of say, This Is Us, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a seat at table.
As we said, this is not a new problem. Major networks have been killing these precious shows for a long time, but the most notable is Firefly on Fox. It was a show that needed more time to find it’s footing, but went on to become a powerhouse of epic fandomness. In response to the fan outcry, Firefly was given a movie (Serenity) to wrap up the story lines of the show and it looks like Timeless might follow in those footsteps.
Shawn Ryan, co-creator of Timeless said this about the movie possibility:
3. If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2 hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it. We don't want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet. #ClockBlockers

There is one thing that Timeless has going for it that Firefly didn’t – streaming services! Now that NBC has handed down the cancellation, fans are going full steam ahead with their pleas to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu to save the show. It’s a real option too, as Lucifer was just rescued from the genre cancellation pit by Netflix!
If you are a fan of the show, don’t get too down just yet. This isn’t the first genre show to get an unfair cancellation by a major network, and surely won’t be the last! Keep on rallying for Timeless, ClockBlockers! Here are a few ways people are trying to save the show if you’d like to join in!
Sakina Jaffrey, who plays Denise Christopher on Timeless wants you to “make some noise” for a movie!
If you think a kick-ass #Timeless movie is a great idea, make some noise and let @nbc know about it! @goranvisnjic @malcolmbarrett @abigailspencer @MattLanter @ignatius_sancho @JustDoumit @therealKripke @ShawnRyanTV @arikalisanne pic.twitter.com/04LSEFHDte

And as this fan points out, this wasn’t just a show, it got people interested in history!
Growing up in public education, all I heard in history class is that history is nothing more than a bunch of “old, dead, white dudes.” #Timeless took that idea and burned it to the ground. History is an every-growing, all-inclusive narrative. No one is forgotten. #savetimeless
