Legion, Season 2, Episode 11, “Chapter 19,” Aired June 12, 2018
Wow, now that was something! The entire season has been building up to this moment, well 2 seasons if you really think about it. David vs Farouk! The battle of the century for all the marbles, or whatever the kids are playing these days.
So, did the Legion season 2 finale live up to all all our wildest expectations? Abso-fucking-lutely. Let’s talk about this amazing episode.
The big fight
This show has had a lot of great moments in its history: the black and white Lenny scene, the Oliver/David dance off and now this epic fight. A fight featuring two telepaths floating to each other while singing the whole time. It was both confusing and amazing all at the same time.
When they finally get down to business it might be one of the greatest superhero fights I have ever seen. Having two people fight with their minds is no easy task, yet the way they accomplished it in the sky with the cartoons was just brilliant.
Oliver and Mel
This was a very interesting scene to me, not only because Oliver was as amazing as ever. I mean seriously, he is just a treat in his completely confused way. Not only was this scene funny, but it was set 3 years into the future and gave us a glimpse of what went down. We don’t get all the details, but we do get that David went nuts. This really set the rest of the episode up well for what was coming and for next season.
This dude is just an amazing actor, I don’t even know what else to say about it. The way he portrayed the 2 different voices in his head was amazing, acting in such a way that they were all 3 clearly different. It was great.
OK, how dumb is Division 3? Did no one there actually think through what they were doing when they decided to trap David and put him on trial for future crimes? You can’t possibly hold him, I don’t care what Cary thinks he has built – David is just too strong, especially when he goes full dark side.
You would just think that someone there would realize that they were creating the monster that they were so afraid of. David is fragile and there is probably a way to deal with him that doesn’t involve setting him off like a bat shit crazy super mutant.
Now here is where it got a little dark and probably contentious for a lot of people, as David wipes Syd’s mind so that she will continue to love him. To make matters worse he basically rapes her, given that she was not of sound, consenting mind. Some might say that this was an unnecessary track for the show to take, but I disagree. This type of conflict is exactly what needed to happen.
Let’s be clear, David was beyond wrong and he did a horrible thing, but from a plot point I think it makes a lot of sense. I mentioned earlier that Division 3 basically created their worst fear, but they didn’t do it for no reason. Cary saw what happened and it makes sense that this could spur action on their part thinking David had gone off the deep end.
The other reason, and don’t hate me for this, is that his relationship with Syd needed to end. I don’t think anyone would argue that there is probably no going back from this, for either of them. Syd obviously won’t forgive him, and now he feels betrayed. For Legion to truly make David the villain next season he needed to have no attachments. As long as she was still in the picture, he wasn’t going to fully unleash his bad side. Now he can.
Count me as one of the many that are really excited for where the next season is going. We have had 2 full seasons where the Shadow King was the main villain, it was time for a change. Division 3, with the help of Farouk, chasing down a completely off the rails David makes me really happy.
As an added bonus, with David fully powered, how much crazy stuff are we going to see him do? I feel like we are only seeing the surface of his true power and I cannot wait for what he truly can do.W
