The 100 5×05, Season 5, Episode 5 Discussion: “Shifting Sands,” Aired May 15, 2018

Welcome to another meeting of the The 100 Support Group! In this session we need to address something that is more speculation than fact. In a show that is so focused on survival, I am a little shocked that this hasn’t come up before (other than the Reapers). So here’s the big question…

Did Wonkru become cannibals?

It’s not a complelty crazy idea if you think about it. Historically, people have eaten others to survive and it’s not something we can judge them too hard for because (luckily) most of us have never been in such a position. And it’s a concept we have seen on television and this show (as mentioned above), but it was never something we thought we’d be questioning about the main characters we know and love. Before you freak out at the thought of Octavia serving her brother and Clarke human cookies, let’s review the evidence.

No food. The bunker was barely equipped to support the number of people in it when they first entered sealed it. The Arc peeps even staged a lock out in order to make sure they didn’t starve! They were prepared to survive underground forever and didn’t think they would ever make it back to the surface. That may have changed the way they looked at their resources, aka dead people.

Body count. They are down a LOT of people (813 from 1200). And they don’t talk about the “Dark Year,” but it’s definitely something that Octavia doesn’t want to think about. Is that the year they started munching on folks? Was it the year the lights malfunctioned and she just super doesn’t want to talk about it – who knows. But something tells us it’s directly linked to the heavily reduced number of people in the bunker.

The prayer. “All of me for all of us.” Just let those words muddle through your head a bit. That sounds like a thing you say before you start munching on your pals – but at least it sounds like they all agreed to do things this way.

Leaving the bodies behind. When they finally did get to the ground and they lost some people, Octavia orders Kara to strip them of their armor and leave the bodies. Kara was baffled at this idea! At first I thought that maybe they had an elaborate funeral ritual and that she wanted to honor the dead. But then another (and much darker) thought occurred to me. What the french did they do in the bunker? WHAT DID THEY DO WITH THE DEAD BODIES IN THE BUNKER?! Seriously, where did they put them? Are we to believe that there is secret wing of the already packed bunker that is holding hundreds of corpses?

It’s icky and one thousand percent disturbing, but it’s definitely something we should have expected to face at some point. If the idea becomes too much to handle, hit us up on twitter for a list of Disney movies to cleanse your cannibal thought consumed brain. We got you!
