The Originals 5×06 “What, Will, I, Have, Left” aired May 30, 2018.
I have no words. No words! OK, I have some words, so let’s break down that emotionally-charged, heartbreaking episode. I’m going to dive right into it.
Hayley Marshall’s legacy: A mother that will do anything to protect her child
The most gut-wrenching part of this episode: Hayley’s self-sacrifice. My heart fell when the love of her life, Elijah, burst into the room, staked Klaus, then went over to comfort her daughter’s captor. I didn’t think things could get any worse, and then, as she’s about to be killed (after being binded, no less!) she makes peace with her next move. She knows that she can’t take out Elijah, she knows that Roman will at least keep Hope alive, and that she must take out Greta. Ripping off Greta’s daylight ring, she uses the last energy and love for her daughter to kill herself and Greta. I had a feeling some of our major players were going to die in the final season, but the way Hayley went out completely gutted me. I at least thought she and Elijah would get one last embrace (with Elijah’s memories back), but this shit is a whole other level of realness.
This show is not about ships, but about family.
Let’s get one thing straight: for shippers that are upset about the lack of sexually-charged scenes of Klaroline, think deeper than that. I am loving how Caroline’s presence on this show is about supporting Klaus evolving into a father. It is deeper than a love story, and it makes their relationship eternal. Even if Klaus and Caroline aren’t together romantically (yet), their friendship and love for one another as two parents who love their children binds them for (eternal) life.
Halijah fans, I won’t be able to take the heartbreak of Elijah once he realizes he could have saved his OTL, but he’ll have to live with that. I “hope” he’ll find comfort in knowing that she self-sacrificed herself saving her daughter, and we wouldn’t expect anything less of Hayley Marshall. Her character, on both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, has always represented badass, strong, females. She was strong without vengeance or a purpose other than that was just simply her. We love you, H. Always and Forever.
What this means for the rest of the season
Next week’s preview hints that we’re going back to New Orleans, where Greta’s vamps and Elijah are seeking further revenge on Klaus and Co. TBH, I’m ready for this storyline to wrap up. Greta’s gone, and Roman’s realization that his mom was a total bitch sets him up for a lead in the spinoff show, Legacies. Maybe The Hollow will come back into play here?
Additional Questions: Declan’s big reveal and restoring Elijah
We didn’t NEED Declan to be related to Cami, so I’m thinking he will serve a bigger purpose. We all know that Cami will be making a cameo (assuming in ghost-form of some sort, obviously), so I’m anxious to see that unfold. It will be beautiful for her to see Klaus’ evolution into a father, too.
Elijah’s ignorance is starting to unnerve me. His memories need to be restored ASAP, GUYS! I have a haunting feeling that Elijah will die at the end of the series. Especially knowing that Hayley is gone, maybe they can live in the afterlife together.
The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9pm/8c on The CW.
