Supergirl recap: Season 3, Episode 19, “The Fanatical” Aired May 21, 2018.
Hello, Superfans! It has finally happened, I never thought it would. On Monday, May 21st, we got an entire episode dedicated to James Olsen.
This episode has been 3 years in the making. James has been a main character for 3 seasons, but this is the first time I feel the audience got some insight into his mind.
Before we discuss this episode, I want to take a look at Mr. Olsen’s journey to up to this point. We may need a little refresher!
Superman’s Best Friend
In Season One of Supergirl Jimmy Olsen was introduced as Superman’s best friend. We didn’t know much about him. He worked at Cat Co. That was it, that’s all we knew. Throughout the season we found out more.
- Jimmy prefers to be called James.
- He left the Daily Planet to expand his career, beyond photographer.
- James knows who Kara is.
What we didn’t know and found out later in the season was, Superman asked James to watch Kara and report back. Oh, no he didn’t! Naturally Kara found out about this and was not pleased. She of course forgave him in time and they became friends.
Kara’s New Interest
Towards the end of the season James and Kara’s feelings for each other shifted. They began to like each other, unbeknownst to the other. In true TV writing form they did not reveal these feelings until the end of the season.
When the time came they both made their feelings known. This of course happened in the season finale. They kissed. Ooh ahh. Then the audience is left to ponder their future for 4 months. So, thank you, The CW for that.
Cut to Season 2. Too be honest with you, I can’t for the life of me remember why Kara and James didn’t work out. It was mutual and happened about ten seconds after they got together. All that build up for nothing.
After they broke up, James started a new path to something greater. He began his journey. In Season 2, James, became Guardian. How did it happen?
- James got tired of watching J’onn and Kara saving the world. He wanted to help.
- We randomly found out that James has a black belt and can drive a motorcycle.
- He decided to try his hand at saving people.
Mr. Olsen was not stupid though. He knew he needed help. He recruited his best bud, the wonderful Winn. Winn became his partner. Since Winn is the suit man, you know what happened next. Alas, Guardian was born!
We knew James wanted to be a superhero. Who doesn’t? His real reasons for it were revealed this week.
“For the first time in my life, when I put that mask on, I became a hero. I am judged by the work that I do and not the color of my skin.”
Are you tearing up? I certainly was. This week made me gain a whole new respect for Guardian.
“When the time comes, one day I will reveal my identity, on my own terms. When I do I want people who look like me, to know that there is someone out there, like them. Someone they can look up to.”
This episode was heart wrenching and beautiful. James journey will continue to grow and flourish. I for one am excited to see where it goes. He was the true hero tonight. Thank you Supergirl writers. I think we all needed that.
