‘The 100’ 5×05 Review: “Shifting Sands” shows the true shifts in power

The 100 5×05, Season 5, Episode 5 Review: “Shifting Sands,” Aired May 15, 2018

Another Tuesday, another stunning look at the trials humanity is facing in the apocalyptic world of The 100. Things have shifted and it’s still a little jarring – but not quite as jarring as the worms that exploded out of that guy! But really, getting floated looks like a Disney dream vacation compared to the nightmarish hell-scape Wonkru, Bellamy and Clarke have wandered into.

Things are shifting and shifting fast! Octavia hasn’t lost control of her crew, but the elements on the ground are proving to be a bigger hurdle than she had imagined. And Shaw’s morals are getting in the way of Diyoza’s goals to take the Valley. Kane and Abby are struggling to deal with their situation and her pills – something Diyoza has no problem enabling if it gets her people treated faster. Octavia and Bellamy are not the united force they once were and the tension is even higher now that Echo is back. Let’s review the episode and break it all down!

Octavia is untouchable. This is still super weird. We love the bad-ass she was in the bunker, but now that she is on the ground again, she is still leading like she is the captain of a crazy gladiator cult. Clarke respects what she has done, but now that they are topside, they need to let her and Bellamy back in on the decision making.

Bellamy and Clarke. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but these two are not in charge anymore. Miller doesn’t even acknowledge Clarke until Bellamy makes him! These two were at the helm of this crazy shit storm for so long that it’s hard to see them fall. Also, watching Bellamy and Clarke discuss their mutual admiration of each other is the best thing ever. Clarke even takes the time to point out how Bellamy is now using both his head and his heart to make decisions. #Swoon

Parasite. Ew. Just ew. That was a new level of creepy and we are still a bit traumatized.

Shaw flips – or does he. We saw this coming, but it’s still so nice to see Shaw show his true (good) colors with Raven. What we didn’t see coming was that it was Shaw that locked them out of the missile system, not Raven. And now Raven has a plan to save everyone, with Shaw’s help. But it’s becoming increasingly harder to figure out if this dude is trustworthy. Was this all part of the plan or is Shaw the Murphy – playing both sides, as long as it benefits him?

Diyoza and the Doc. We knew they needed a doctor for something, but now we know why. Thanks to this creepy dude, who is probs a cannibal, we learn more about the mysterious illness that has gripped the prisoners. Abby is struggling with her addiction, but that won’t stop her from powering through and saving lives. It’s how she rolls. Let’s hope that while she is saving lives, she isn’t ruining her own.

Forest squad. When Murphy escapes, he runs into his peeps (and Madi) in the woods. Madi meeting Murphy was something we hadn’t really thought about, but it was so, so great. We could have watched an entire episode of just this car ride.

Octavia’s threat. Okay, yes – Octavia kept Wonkru alive and strong – but it’s not cool of her to threaten Bellamy. Not. Fucking. Cool. Octavia is lost and if Bellamy can’t bring her back, who can? Also, it was pretty heartbreaking when Octavia said that love is weakness. She clearly loves her friends, and Indra, but she won’t break her Red Queen exterior long enough to show it. (Also, Indra broke our hearts in that moment.)

Diyoza and Kabby. Um, excuse us Diyoza, but Marcus Kane is married to Abby Griffin in our hearts and you can go choke on your tequila.

Echo. Welllllll, this isn’t going to go well. Remember when Bellamy said his sister would be cool with Echo? It’s pretty clear that Bellamy had no idea what his sister had become in that bunker. If Echo falls in line, maybe, just maybe we can see Octavia letting her live. But if Echo sides with Octavia, then she is going against Bellamy. Either way, Becho is heading toward a rocky path. Clarke saw them kiss. We haven’t processed that yet – but look for that topic in a future The 100 Support Group discussion.
