‘Shadowhunters’: Spoiler free review of the 2 hour mid-season finale

‘Shadowhunters’ Season 3 episode 9 “Familia Ante Omnia” and Season 3 episode 10 “Erchomai” airs May 15th 2018

The Shadowhunters two part finale is one of the most tense, emotional, and dare I say creepy episodes to date. It had me screaming, crying, and cringing so much that I found myself needing to take multiple breaks just to process everything. Trust me when I say this episode brings it’s A-game.

Magnus, Simon, and Clary all take a front seat in these episodes, as a large majority of the story was focused around them. It was extremely refreshing to see things circling not just around these characters’ external conflicts, but their internal ones as well. The finale really dives deeper into who they are and what’s important to them. It also poses the question, “How far would you go to protect the people you love?”

Although everyone has their fair share of struggles, Simon’s are highlighted greatly throughout both episodes. I could actually feel my heart breaking for him, but thankfully Izzy is there to help hold him together.

And while we’re on the topic, these two episodes finally give fans of Simon and Izzy the content they deserve. This season has been pretty much a wasteland for Sizzy scenes aside from an occasional one or two, but both episodes in this two-part finale more than make up for it. Although we haven’t seen them together much recently, it’s become clear that Simon and Izzy care greatly for one another. They have a deep bond, that may finally be on the verge of developing into something more when the time is right.

Lilith on the other hand, is finally ready to put the final stages of her plan in motion. She will stop at nothing to resurrect Jonathan, and her power over Jace is helping to quickly move the process along. Although saving Jace is a top priority, it’s becoming more and more difficult to accomplish that goal while Lilith has him wrapped around her finger. If they want even a chance at defeating her and freeing Jace, they’re going to need all hands on deck.

All in all, these episodes felt like the most explosive finale that Shadowhunters has ever had. It’s packed full of action from start to finish, and leaves you absolutely breathless and shaken to your core. The whole season has been building up to these moments, and Shadowhunters does not disappoint. In other words, if you think you’re ready, you’re absolutely wrong.

  • Simon and Izzy take the cake for most emotional scene(s).
  • Clary finds herself in a lot of trouble this episode. A lot.
  • There’s a Malec scene that will leave you teary eyed.
  • Pick up some tissues before you tune in.
