Anime best friends – this should be an easy topic for me. If there are two subjects I like discussing, then they are anime & what it means to be a best friend. I’m lucky enough to have a large group of friends. I can double that luck when I know that I can call on any of them for support at any time. This topic is inspired by the celebration we shared over the weekend. So this article is for my fellow puzzle pieces.
I hope you take something away from my observations of these anime best friends! Whether they are total otaku crazies, siblings clinging to one another or coworkers trying to topple a government, when you’ve got a best friend you can do anything. These anime best friends show us just what we need to do for our friends. They help complete us or #hype us up or drive us to achieve our best.
Warning: Spoilers are present. However I hope they are minor enough that if you dig the characters, then you’ll take a chance on the story.
Anime best friends: Erika & Walker
Erika and Walker totally immerse themselves in the otaku culture. They eat, sleep, and breathe anime and manga. They live in a fantasy world of their own creation. What I want to say might be better summed up by Erika herself:
“Reality is such a pain. And for those of us who get fed up with that kind of reality, we simply choose to make a new one. We create little walls, and separate the trash from the stuff we like, and when that’s all done we keep the things we care about and kick the rest to the curb. You’d be amazed how well it works! A whole world made out of just moe, tsundere, and BL, it’s the best discovery ever! If you ask me, that really is the best way to separate reality, from fiction.”
Having a best friend that you can share what you are passionate about just makes the world so much more fun.
Anime best friends: Homura & Madoka
Time travel can either be a pain or boon for friendship. I know if I could go back and relive moments with my friends, I would seize it. However to have the power to go back and change the past to save the present is an ominous ability. Homura uses that ability to try to save Madoka over and over. But her failings in the timeline give Madoka the impetus to become a magical girl herself. Madoka in turn rides the time traveling wave Homura generates to make her own wish come true.
Having a best friend that you can share a wish with makes the pain of loss in life worth it.
Anime best friends: Rukia & Renji
Sometimes the social structure makes keeping a friendship intact harder than it should be. In the case of Rukia and Renji in the Soul Society, it complicates things a lot. Despite being orphans, they find one another and form a surrogate family. But they are separated by class and rank when Rukia is adopted into a noble family. Renji strives to realize his spiritual power so that he can catch up to Rukia. Having to act under orders from his superiors, Renji continues to push himself so that he may become Rukia’s equal once again.
Having a best friend to pursue not only gives you a measuring rod to judge your growth against but also a supportive voice to cheer you on.
Anime best friends: Roy & Maes
When you first observe the friendship between Roy and Maes, you might think that it is a case of one man taking advantage of another. But Roy’s seriousness needs the balance of Maes’ goofiness. As Roy climbs the ranks, he needs Maes to support him. They share a vision of what the government should do and work in tandem to bring the change. Sadly it isn’t until Maes is gone that we see the emotions hit Roy. He knows he can’t do what he needs to do without his friend. He has to become a different man and pursue a different course.
Having a best friend to support your vision can give you the confidence to make anything happen.
Anime best friends: Sora & Shiro
This pairing might be a little weird because Sora and Shiro are adopted siblings. Yet I feel like they fall into the best friend category. By their own admission, they are two halves that when put together make a whole. Sora is cunning and emotional; Shiro is calm and logical. Their ability to compete in games is at a superhuman level. They not only cover up for the other’s weaknesses but they reinforce the other’s strengths.
Having a best friend that helps you be more than you are is a goal we should all pursue.
Anime best friends: Naruto, Sasuke & Sakura
This trio doesn’t follow the pattern of best friends that I’ve established so far. I felt like I needed to include something a little different. The balance of feelings between these three is so different from the pairings I’ve discussed. There is more of a tension of opposites when you consider Naruto and Sasuke and Sakura. This triangle gives us more perspectives to consider. Sakura tearfully pleads with Naruto to save Sasuke. Naruto sees a bond mirrored in Sasuke’s loss while dealing with his jealousy of Sasuke’s ability and the affection Sakura shows for Sasuke. While Sasuke witnesses the jump in Naruto’s power after just a little training and knows of Sakura’s feelings for him. There is a challenge in maintaining a best friend relationship with so many tensions pulling at each point.
Having a best friend that challenges you, yet will support and protect you…well that kind of relationship shows you how to grow in a world that isn’t so easy to survive.
I think that I’m lucky to have friendships that mirror the lessons I’ve written about here. I’m thankful to see the different aspects. We need people in our lives that get excited about the things that make us excited. We need people that share our dreams. Friends are those that support us but also give us a goal to pursue. They challenge us because they care.
