‘Jessica Jones’ recap: Season 2

Jessica Jones is back and so are all of our faves! Season 2 brings a mess of emotions and feels that we weren’t prepared for!

1. The Past Uncovered

Last year’s season was in a word: epic. The characters of Jessica, Trish, Malcolm, and J. Hogarth became instant fan favorites. David Tennant’s Killgrave remains unmatched.

In fact, the writers came up with a new plan. Instead of appealing to the straight up creepy factor, they grasped at your heart strings. I must admit, I did not think it would work. Boy, was I wrong. This year’s villain is none other than Jessica’s mother and the doctor that created them.

Jessica and Trish go after IGH. They start their journey with the desire to dismantle the organization and find answers for Jessica. They come out with more than they ever thought possible.

2. Hogarth’s News

One of the many reasons we love Jessica Jones are the powerful female characters. Jeri Hogarth exudes power like no one else. This season however, we get to see a different side of Jeri. We watch as her power gets stripped away and it is heartbreaking.

  • Jeri finds out she has ALS. She is willing to try anything.
  • Hogarth’s partners are trying to force her into severance. She must find a way around it.
  • Jessica charges Jeri with watching a witness to a crime.

Jeri’s vulnerability breaks her. She is conned by the witness, Inez. She develops feelings for her and throws her sensibilities out the door. At the end of the season Hogarth is left robbed, broken, and without hope.

She does hold on to what little power she has left. Due to the help and dedication of Malcolm, she secures her win against her former partners. Hogarth is now off to start her own firm.

3. Malcolm’s Departure

Calm down. Malcolm did not leave the series or die. He does make a different type of exit. Malcom leaves Alias Investigations.

Throughout the season Jessica never thanks Mal. It begins to weigh on him. He wants to develop a larger role in the agency. Jessica is quite reluctant to let that happen. She eventually gives him the go ahead.

Yay! Right? Nope. This sparks a series of unsettling events, that leaves them estranged.

  1. Malcolm for some idiotic reason decides to sleep with Trish. Yes, I also screamed at the top of my lungs.
  2. His relationship with her complicates his with Jess.
  3. He ultimately betrays Jessica to side with Trish. An indirect result of this leaves Trish in the hospital.

I have a feeling we are in for one hell of a remorse arc in Season 3.

4. WTF Trish?

Yes, Trish slept with Malcolm. No, no one is happy about this. Why? Can we take a minute and be blunt? Trish and Jessica are endgame. I will argue with you until the end of time about this. Anyways, I digress…

Unfortunately this season features Trish, the addict. She replaces her addiction with alcohol, with power. To be fair the writers hinted at Trish’s desire to be super towards the end of the last season. My heart was not prepared for what they had in store.

“You traded on addiction for another.”

Trish’s unhinged behavior brings her lust for power to the ultimate boiling point. She kidnaps the Doctor who gave Jessica her powers and demands some of her own. Leading to the downfall of their relationship.

5. The Tragic Outcome

There are not enough words for the heartbreak I felt at the end of the season. Jessica’s Mom turns out to be an unstable lunatic. She murders everyone who gets close to finding out the truth about IGH. Everyone that is, except for Trish.

The Doctor that created them, is also the love of Jessica’s Mom’s life. Trish inadvertently is the reason for his death. Jessica must get her mother away from Trish at all costs. She agrees to come with her to flee the country.

The entire police force is on their tail. Trish is warned that if Jessica gets in the way, the police will put her down, along with her Mother. Trish doing the only thing she can think of to save Jessica,

The last words Jessica says to Trish this season are:

“Now when I look at you, the only thing I see is the person who killed my Mother.”

Are you crying yet? Me too…

I am an actor and a writer. I spend my free time reading, watching television, and hanging out with friends. My love of all things supernatural came from my first time watching ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and has expanded into a wide range of shows. I love all things ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘The Vampire Diaries’, and ‘The Originals’, to name a few. Traveling, cons, and beaches are three of my favorite things!
