Identifying what new and returning animes there are to watch can be a challenge all by itself. My first article for Pure Fandom tasked me with pitching a handful of good starter animes for people just getting into the fandom. This last weekend in St. Louis I was challenged to lead a panel to introduce a few new and returning animes to whoever was crazy enough to sit in on our programming.
But I thought I could cover a few new and returning animes here in greater depth.
Sword Art Online: Alicization
SAO makes a return for a 3rd full season following the movie side story Ordinal Scale last fall. Alicization picks up on the story of Kirito, Asuna, and their friends after the emotional roller coaster of the Mother’s Rosario arc. Unfortunately unless you’ve read the light novel source materials this trailer doesn’t reveal a whole lot of what we’re going to see in Alicization. There are a couple of things we can expect without spoiling too much: 1) Kirito will be a hero stuck in another game and 2) his boyish charm will get him into trouble with Asuna and misunderstandings with a whole new cast of ladies. Alicization is scheduled for release sometime after summer 2018, but I would expect a quick turn around on the dub since the series is already so popular in the West.
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (It is difficult to love an otaku)
Wotaku is something totally new. I’ve only just started reading the manga that it is based on, but I’m excited for it. Now the difference between “otaku” and “wotaku” is a new and changing thing as well. In Japanese, wotaku seems to be a label for persons obsessed with a single focus while otaku is a label for persons obsessed with a variety of interests. In this story the two main characters attempt to date despite their different obsessive natures. So the challenge is that even if you find someone with a love of an obsession like yours will you be able to love them despite the differences. Wotaku is scheduled for a spring 2018 release.
Bungou Stray Dogs Dead Apple
Now I’m still crossing my fingers for a dub of the first two seasons of Bungou Stray Dogs, but I’m equally excited for a stand-alone movie in this franchise. The premise of authors with superpowers is one that I’m totally head-over-heels in love with (it may be because I hope to develop a power of my own based on my rhetorical skills)! The trailer comes loaded with a great soundtrack and all kinds of action that is impossible to stay calm about. Plus any time Atsushi goes full on were-tiger is a perfect excuse to get #hype! Dead Apple is scheduled for an early March release.
My Hero Academia – Movie + Season 3
If there’s something you could have guessed, then it’d be that it is impossible for me to plug new MHA content when it is there. And even better – there’s season 3 AND a movie to look forward to in 2018. The movie is going to introduce a new character while the students of class 1-A will play a background role. While season 3 will pick up on the continued training of Deku and his classmates as they get more real world experience in how to be a hero. Season 3 should begin airing later this spring (with a quick release on the dub, I imagine). The movie does not have a release date as of yet.
So what new and returning animes are you looking forward to? I know my “to watch” list is constantly growing even with the binging I do, but I’m always open to new suggestions.
And I hope you’ll return for my article next week – I have something special planned for Valentine’s Day. There are just too many sweet, romantic moments in anime for me not to share a few of my favorites!
