The Resident recap Season 1, Episode 2, “Independence Day”, Aired January 22nd, 2018
Heart transplants, removing buckshot from asses, and a wide variety of other crazy events were the fuel to this episode! If we thought the first part of the premiere was crazy, this one blew us out of the water. We can’t wait to see where things go from here. But before then, let’s break this episode down!
Career day
Conrad may not be the by the book definition of a hero, but it can’t be denied that he does his best. The root of why he became a doctor proved to us just how important it has always been for Conrad to help people. We also learned some really nifty tricks on what type of classroom objects can be used for medical purposes. Always a valuable skill to have. The stethoscope Conrad made with a balloon, a funnel, and some tubing was pretty cool.
We got to meet Doctor Lane Hunter in this episode and we’re on the fence about her! Lane is a great doctor, but she clearly has a close bond with Conrad as well. With what we’ve seen so far, Conrad’s opinions on his coworkers means a lot to how we’ll think of them. Lane also seems to have a friendship with Doctor Bell. That’s one part we aren’t so sure on. But she is sure to tell him to go easy on Conrad, so she clearly knows about the tension between the two. Some of her decisions have been questionable as well. We’re reserving judgement on Lane for now.
Heartless
We were right there jumping for joy with Conrad when Micah was able to get a viable heart. But of course, as things go, Bell had to come along and steal it for his own patient. Did we mention that Bell’s is his friend, head of publicity for the hospital, and a 63 year old smoker? Because he is. Yeah, we were hoping there would be some kind of redemption for Bell at one point or another. Something to explain why he acts the way he does. But instead, we just got more fuel to dislike him. We are right there with Okafor and her zero tolerance for Bell’s bullshit.
Everything turned out okay for both Micah and Bell’s pal. It ended up being a good thing that Devon saved Chloe. Like Doctor Okafor said, the girl was basically an organ farm at that point. But her heart went to good use, and there’s a chance her other organs can save other lives as well. Conrad had to pull some dirty tricks to get what he wanted, but wasn’t it also what was for the best? Like Conrad said, both patients were getting new hearts and Chloe’s organs would help save lives. Bell got what he wanted from Conrad as well. That little blackmail trick worked this time, but at some point the luck is going to run out.
Nicrad
Did we already mention that we ship Conrad and Nic? Because we do! The way that Nic is always there for Conrad, regardless of what is going on with their relationship, is amazing. Not only does Nic put Conrad’s feelings above her own, but she knows what he needs without him having to say a word. We can’t wait to get a bit more back story on what’s happened between these two in the past. We also can’t wait to see where the two of them go in the future.
But Nic isn’t the only one who makes it clear how much she cares. When Nic is in the room with Conrad, he visibly relaxes. When she touches him, it’s clear that Conrad stands the strongest with Nic by his side. The connection between them obviously runs deep and that’s the kind of ship we are rooting for. They make each other stronger and support each other, even when they’re upset. That is the kind of relationship that should be held on to. We would love to see the two of them get together and stay together. Prove that the show can be stronger with a solid central relationship.
Rookie power
Devon is clearly going to make an excellent doctor, and not just because he was given a great mentor. The fact that he is able to catch things that other doctors don’t is really going to help him be great. The pressure is on for him to do well and succeed, but we have faith that he will be able to do well under that pressure.
