The Resident recap Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot”, Aired January 21st, 2018
This was just the first part in a two part series premiere but it certainly wasn’t lacking the drama and excitement! We met our main characters and have already decided who we’re rooting for. We’ve also decided who we want to see go down, too! Keep reading below for the breakdown of that crazy beginning!
Clear judgement
It took less than five minutes for us to dislike Doctor Bell. He clearly has some type of issue with his hand shaking as badly as it was. Surgeons and shaky hands don’t mix. Which is made abundantly clear when Bell kills a patient during what was supposed to be a routing appendectomy. We could root in his favor a bit as his fellow doctors are too busy taking selfies to pay attention. But any defending remarks we had fly out the window when Bell forces his team into lying about how the patient has died. Something not even remotely acceptable.
Enter Matt Czuchry. If we didn’t already love him for his role as Logan in Gilmore Girls, (we do) his first minute on screen had us loving him as Conrad Hawkins. From pouring energy drinks on sports cars that belong to jerks illegally parking in handicap spots, to wanting what is best for his patients. But Conrad isn’t perfect either. His decision at the end wasn’t the best and we all breathed a sigh of relief when Nic’s appearance was enough to stop him. Although it may have been the right decision, it wasn’t one for Conrad to make.
Conrad’s team
First we have Devon, ready to begin his first year of residency. He’s given to Conrad and we think they may just be the perfect pair. Devon was top of his class and has attended Harvard and Yale. Definitely not a school career to scoff at. But Conrad isn’t pulling any punches. He doesn’t care what school he went to or how high his test scores were. Conrad cares how Devon does on the spot and without his text books. Devon immediately thinks he’s been given an insane doctor as a mentor. We don’t exactly disagree, but we do think Conrad is the best.
The one person who seems to be in Conrad’s corner? Nurse Nic. She’s fully aware Conrad’s methods are anything but conventional. But she also thinks he’s the best. Nic is clearly good at her job and she knows who to stand beside. She also used to date Conrad. Or is still dating Conrad. Kind of. We think? Either way, we totally ship it! Their chemistry is incredible! But Nic certainly doesn’t let Conrad call the shots. She’s an independent and strong woman who isn’t afraid to put Conrad in his place. Or lock him in a room with his pants down to cool his heels.
Arrogance and confidence
Conrad and Bell seem to face off a lot. The amount of fearlessness Conrad displays when confronting Bell about his lies had us cheering out loud. From making deals with overdosing drug addicts, to diabetics with severe gangrene, Conrad seems to handle everything with a cool head. But it’s clear how deep his feelings run for his patients. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Conrad is confident. He knows what he’s capable of and the extent of his abilities. He isn’t perfect and he does have a tendency to come off abrasive.
But Bell is arrogant. He doesn’t feel there are limits to his abilities, even though it’s clear he’s past his prime as a surgeon. Something made clear once again when his hands shake too much to operate a new machine. Like we needed another example after the first screw up. Doctor Okafor is clearly the one for the job with the new machine, but she’s forced to give her well deserved credit to Bell when he blackmails her. Just when we thought we couldn’t dislike him more.
Books to life
Devon has a lot of lessons to learn about medicine that can’t be learned from a text book. This is what we can’t wait to see him learn from Conrad. Medical problems aren’t always solvable within the guidelines. It takes courage and heart in combination with all that knowledge to be successful. It’s clear that Conrad understands that. But it’s also clear he has walls up that result in his cold demeanor. That’s where Devon comes in. They can help each other be better, and we can’t wait to watch their journey!
