The Magicians Season 3 Premiere: 3×01 “The Tale of the Seven Keys” aired Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018

(This post contains major spoilers from The Magicians 3×01 – obvi)

Our favorite crew of magical delinquents is back, and it was 100% worth the wait! Last season, Quentin killed a God and now there is no magic in their world. Julia still has a spark (more on that in a few), but basically – magic is totally dunzo. So what now?

Well, after witnessing a rather depressing magic-free magic class, we knew it was going to be rough for our peeps – and from the state of things at the start of the season, it is. Penny is still all messed up from his super cancer/library fiasco, Kady is miserable, Alice is still not adjusting to her new reality, Brakebills is in danger of closing, Margo and Eliot are being held hostage in their own kingdom, and Quentin and Julia are just distraught.

Total downer, right? Wrong! Even with their super fucked up circumstances, this episode has done something amazing. Each character has found a way to search for a solution, even if their hope and prospects are dwindled down to nothing. They (of course) each have their own way of approaching it.

Quentin and Julia

These two BFF’s team up with Josh to track down a party god. They dance and sing their way into the party, get high, but walk out with the info they need to track down magic.

Eliot and Margo

Over in Fillory, this duo is stuck with some freaky AF fairies that seem to know their every move. They quickly realize this and start talking in code. Side note: the code convo was AMAZING!!! Eliot decides to go off and find the white lady so she will grant his wish to banish the faires, but instead he meets The Great Cock! He gives him some tips on communicating with Quentin (via bunnies!) and thus begins the quest!

Alice, Penny and Kady

They are still sad and (understandably) messed up due to their respective circumstances, but they are still hanging onto their tiny bits of hope.

It was a such a great episode and had a great message: When things go to shit, you can either cry in the corner or you can fight to save what you love. Season 2 was rough for everyone and the loss of magic could have (and maybe should have) broken them all, but instead – the magicians are fighting back and giving us all hope. It’s the perfect story-line to kick off Season 3 (and the new year).

So remember, when things get hard (and they will), grab a bunny, order some bacon, and go full ’07 Britney on that shit.

Watch Season 3 of The Magicians Wednesdays on Syfy.
