Riding the Star Wars wave from the release of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, a concept trailer for an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film has been released via Smasher on YouTube. Needless to say, it’s pretty damn awesome and is giving Star Wars fans all sorts of feels.
A possible script has been ordered by Disney for a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi movie with Stephen Daldry rumored to be directing. It’s likely the film will take place between movies Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Of course, fans will be damned if our beloved Ewan McGregor isn’t called upon to reprise his role from the prequel films.
At the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, Ewan was asked by press (after winning Best Actor in a limited series) if he’d be willing to play Obi-Wan again, and to no one’s surprise he said yes. Confirming there’s nothing concrete in the works, he also added that he loved Episode VIII after recently seeing it over the holiday break. This isn’t the first time that Ewan has publicly stated he’d love to play Obi-Wan again, proving even more why fans love him so dearly.
This concept trailer for the possible-film-in-the-works presents the setting and tone most fans are campaigning for in a solo Kenobi film: more serious, less CGI, and more method than epic. Think: Rogue One for Obi-Wan (no, I didn’t mean for that to rhyme.) The footage for the trailer is taken from Ewan’s 2015 film, Last Days in the Desert. Fortunately for us fans, Ewan’s role in the film provided a very Star Wars-esque costume and setting.
Personally, I’d love to see the film set the way this concept trailer depicts. In our Star Wars Theory Series Podcast we’ve collected ideas from fans on what they’d like to see from a solo Kenobi film, which includes everything from Ben Kenobi becoming a hermit to including Darth Vader and the Inquisitors. Whichever direction Disney decides to go, you can bet on me being on-board.
