Shameless recap: Season 8, Episode 05, “The (Mis)Education of Liam Fergus Beircheart Gallagher,” Aired Dec 03, 2017
This week on Shameless, someone falls off the wagon, two siblings are at odds, and another old Gallagher boyfriend surfaces. We’re breaking down the 8 best moments of the episode!
#1. Derek is back!
Debbie gets a shock when she goes to pick up Frannie from her grandma’s after her welding test. A strange girl is carrying Frannie around. It’s Derek’s new girlfriend! Originally, Debbie had planned to leave Frannie with her Abuela while she went out of town with friends. That’s until she sees Derek is back. Like any “good” mother she jets out of the house as soon as she can. Instead of finding another babysitter, Debbie gets high and goes out of town with her guy friends anyway…Frannie in tow. Her screwups don’t stop there. Debbie has unprotected sex with her beauty school beau and is now desperate for the morning after pill. Hopefully, she won’t end up pregnant again.
#2. Trevor and Ian sitting in a tree.
Trevor enlists Ian’s help in trying to obtain funds for a new shelter for the at-risk youth. The youth centers biggest benefactor is more than willing to help out and Ian is sure he knows him from somewhere. He finally remembers him from the club that he used to work at. The guy was one of his regular customers. This news doesn’t faze Trevor. As long as they get the money they need he’s fine with it. Ian uses this opportunity to again put the moves on Trevor. This time it works! The church they’re trying to lease is also the same church Fiona is trying to help her boss get tenants for. They don’t want at-risk youth in the space.
#3. Liam’s trouble at school.
Frank picks up Liam at school and finds out that he failed a test. Frank tells the principal it’s a cultural issue. They’ve made Liam their spokesmodel for diversity but haven’t altered his education to make up for his cultural background. Frank says that the terms used in the test are only those that rich kids would know. We’re thinking that if maybe Liam was left in class during instruction time, he may know what they mean. He’s pulled out every time there is a photo-op or a campus tour. The PTA plans to help Frank get the cultural bias taken out of the school even when it comes to education. Liam brings his test back home with the F crossed out and an A+ instead. If anyone is wondering, Liam did not retake the test.
#4. Lip is getting his ass kicked.
Lip’s fling with his co-worker is an ongoing affair. Robbie likes to slap, choke and be really rough during sex. Lip has bruises and scratches everywhere. Ian and Debbie overhear one of the encounters. Debbie is concerned but Ian tells her it sounds like it’s voluntary. Lip appears to like the sex but not the abuse. Robbie isn’t the only one kicking Lip’s ass. Brad is also using Lip as a punching bag. Brad relapses due to the stress of becoming a new father. Lip tries to drag him out of a bar so Brad beats him up and drives away drunk. Lip spends the night trying to find Brad but he never surfaces.
#5. Kevin is a cowboy.
Kevin is getting down to his Southern roots. He’s started “Kentucky Hour” at the Alibi. He dresses in a hat and boots and plays country music. Kev is also carrying around a Southern slang dictionary so he can implement it in his everyday speech. Oh, we almost forgot, he’s also taken up the banjo. If you’re thinking to yourself, he’s taking this way too far, we agree! Like with everything Kevin does, he’s applying his whole heart to being a Kentuckian.
#6. Svetlana is back to her scheming ways.
Svetlana wants fifty percent of the bar instead of a third. She tells Veronica that she’s making more money than them so she should get a bigger cut. Svetlana tries to bribe V with sex. At first, Veronica is able to resist her but that doesn’t last long. V has to go home and tell Kev that she again let Svetlana manipulate her. Kevin tells Veronica that they will meet with Svetlana and she will be strong this time. This happens until Kev leaves the house to pick up lunch. When he gets back he finds Svetlana leaving their bedroom with a signed contract for half of the bar. Oh, Veronica!
#7. No more military school for Carl.
Carl’s school scholarship is being given to a kid with more Indian than Carl has. Carl decides that he has to go to the military school and he will do anything to make it happen. He asks Fiona for his job back. She already has a dishwasher at the restaurant so that job is taken. Carl volunteers to clean the grease trap. This is absolutely disgusting. It literally makes you never want to go out to eat ever again. Fiona also has Carl help clean up the empty church that she’s trying to find a buyer for. After a day’s work and only making $150.00, Carl decides that he’ll use Fiona’s car to be an Uber. Only Carl didn’t sign up with Uber. He’s just driving around picking up people who look like they’re waiting for a ride. He’s still holding the guy in the basement that was stealing. Carl helps him detox off the drugs. The guy pays him back by bringing his girlfriend to Carl along with $5000 to help her get clean. Maybe, he doesn’t need school after all.
#8. World War Gallagher.
The Gallagher’s have been at odds plenty of times. This season everyone has been pretty much united. Even Frank has stayed in line. The unity may be coming to an end though. Fiona and Ian are both after the same building. Fiona is trying to find tenants that will help drive up the neighborhood value. Ian does some questionable acts with the youth centers benefactor and his wife to obtain the money for a downpayment for the church. Fiona tells Ian that the neighborhood doesn’t want the at-risk youth in the neighborhood. Ian says that these kids need help and he’s not going to tell them they can’t have the space he promised. It will be fun to see who ultimately wins this battle.
This episode was crazy from start to finish but we’ve all come to expect crazy when talking about the Gallagher’s. What did you think of this episode of Shameless? Tweet us your thoughts at @Pure_Fandom or @ndintelman34.
