The Deuce recap: Season 1, Episode 6, “Why Me?”, aired Oct 15, 2017
There was no shortage of development this week on The Deuce. With the brothel finally up and running and the cops on their side, all signs point to success for Vinnie, Rudy, and well…just about everyone else if they get on board. Here’s a breakdown of The Deuce episode 6, “Why Me?”.
When the pimp’s in the crib
Right from the start we see Vinnie in the barber shop trying to convince the pimps to get on board with putting the girls in his new establishment. When that doesn’t immediately pan out, they meet with another pimp from a neighboring brothel to get some temporary girls. It helps to get them on their feet to start.
However, with new police arrests (see below at Law and order), the pimps need a spot for their girls. They team up with Vinnie in a deal where they pay a rent on the rooms per girl and then keep the profits based on each girl’s negotiated rates.
And just when we thought Rudy couldn’t have his hands in more businesses (especially sex-industry ones) we find out more. Rudy enlists the help of Frankie and Mike to check in on a sketchy business partner. Rudy leases sex machines to Marty Hodas and we come to find out he hasn’t been so honest about the finances. This leads to trouble in paradise for Marty, as well as another idea. Black Frankie designs a sketch for some partitioned “peep show” machines that Rudy actually likes. So how long will it be before Rudy makes this a project?
Lights! Camera! Action!
Candy goes to another adult film shoot. When another unknown actress can’t be there due to extenuating circumstances, Candy brings in Lori for help. While getting ready for the shoot, C.C. shows up and demands more money for Lori’s participation in the porno. Can I mention he’s a total dick about it? It might seem endearing that he “values” Lori as a higher dollar amount, but how much of that is she really getting back?
Later we find out that the film director doesn’t have another shoot available until another month. He pays Candy a visit late at night after discussing this. She tells him how she doesn’t want to be an actress and wants to learn to do what he does. He really wants to keep her around and find a spot for her, but he doesn’t have a bunch of room right now on his film crew. He tries to set her up with a female pimp that can help to hold her over money wise until they have another shoot. Candy is clearly not happy with this as she’s pretty much been focusing on getting out of prostitution and into film.
That said, we better see Candy taking the reigns next week and making moves! She’s asked countless times about why she doesn’t make money off of royalties. She’s stated that she wants to be involved with the making of the films, not just being the pretty face in front of the camera. AKA: Candy is about to build a film empire and we need it NOW!
Law and order
The relationship between the police, the community, and our sharks made up the bulk of The Deuce episode 6 “Why Me?”. We knew something was up between Rudy, Tommy, Danny, and Alston, when the sharks tossed some money their way. We’re now getting a glimpse into just how far that tie really goes.
Following the “no-go” zone, the cops are now instructed to crack down on activity around The Deuce theater with street sweeps. Literally, every girl gets arrested and they even tow the legally parked pimp cars. Funny how all of the sudden the police are trying to get the girls off the street at the same time Rudy is. Coincidence? We think….or rather, we know not.
The cracking down of arrests on prostitutes means that the brothel is looking pretty good right now. This gives the pimps an option to keep the girls off of the streets and away from arrest, while still making money. Smart move, Rudy. This is further confirmed when Officer Sweeney shows up at the brothel. He tells Bobby how he made arrangements to keep the girls off the street to avoid arrests, thus sending more business to them. Despite already having arrangements with Rudy, he wants a $500 a week cut from the business just for himself. Ugh. Eye roll.
So what did you all think of The Deuce episode 6? What’s next for Rudy and the many strings he controls? Which girls do you want to see join the brothel next week? Let us know!
