American Horror Story: Cult recap: Season 7, Episode 1, “Election Night”, Aired Sept. 5, 2017
FINALLY, we have Evan Peters back on our TV screens! Wait, this is supposed to be about American Horror Story: Cult as a whole, crap! FINALLY, we have American Horror Story back on our TV screens! I am super pumped because it’s one of the few shows I really get emotionally invested in each year. I am honored to get to break down each week’s episode right here, exclusively on Pure Fandom. Let’s dive right into the American Horror Story: Cult season premiere, “Election Night”. With episode one under our belt, let’s take a look at what I consider to be the two main topics of this episode!
Clowns! Ally’s fear or something from her past?
Have you ever met someone that has coulrophobia–the fear of clowns? We all have and I personally have never seen anyone’s fear as intense as Ally’s! Now, that’s not to say it doesn’t exist out there, but it’s hard to believe hers is just a simple fear. The way Ally reacts to something as simple as a comic book really makes you start to think that this isn’t a fear she subtly picked up but more so something from her past that she did that triggers this fear.
By the way…YES…we get more Twisty the clown in this season. I personally feel Twisty is one of the more iconic characters of the American Horror Story franchise. I was super sad to see him go in Freak Show, but the way they tied him in this season is brilliant! It’s clear to us you should never get freaky near Twisty’s bus or he will club your ass upside the head, and we know the end results of that are never good!
ANYWAYS, back to Ally. I feel the grocery store scene was a great way for us to get inside her mind and really feel what she is experiencing, because up until then, it’s been nothing but her crying. So it’s hard for us to understand what she is going through until this point. Although, I could have done without the clowns getting jiggy with it on the watermelon, because now it’s totally ruined watermelon for me! I found it interesting that they didn’t show this scene from the cashier’s point of view. Typically in TV and movie scenes where someone is hallucinating, you get two scenes; one from the person suffering from it and one from who is around that person. It shows you that the person really is hallucinating and that it’s not really happening in real life, but we don’t get that at all. That just leads me to believe there is more than meets the eye to this fear of hers. Also, she just runs into the street pole basically totaling the front of her car and it’s no big deal to them, like they just got 20 more Tesla’s chilling in their garage. They just continue running their life like, ‘oh well!’ Not one argument of ‘how are we going to pay for this’ or ‘how is our kid getting to school?’ I think it’s safe to say they are wealthy, because I spotted a vintage looking bingo roller in their house, so you know they’re shopping at Target at least twice a week! Hell yeah, I need some more candles!
One last thing, I don’t know if you guys noticed, but during the scene where Ally and Ivy are at their restaurant and Ally’s trying some new dishes, the camera is behind Ally while she is sitting at the table and no one else is in the room. I felt I saw a little bit of a tattoo on the back of her neck. Now, I know in real life Sarah has a tattoo on her neck, but it was almost like they were dropping a hint! I know we probably won’t find out until mid season where this fear came from, BUT I am going to predict that Sarah used to be in a cult when she was younger and that the tattoo might have been some sort of branding mark from it.
Siblings? Marriage? Cult?
Now this topic I am super excited to discover more about as the season continues—the Kai and Winter relationship! It was revealed that they do share the same last name, Anderson. What we don’t know is how they share the same last name. We are led to believe that they are brother and sister through the way they interact, especially when it comes to the pinky promise scenes. I think pinky promises is a fantastic way to throw the audience off the trail and make them think they are siblings. Let’s look at what their relationship could potentially turn out to be.
Yes, first and foremost, they could be siblings. Their interactions with each other are borderline creepy, but sure they can be brother and sister, go for it. They could be married! We see that they share a house and there is no evidence of a parent/adult living with them. In one of the pinky promise scenes, she does mention that kids scare her, making it a possibility that she doesn’t want to have kids and is letting Kai know it. The married relationship I believe more than the sibling one.
The one that I think will be revealed to us is that it’s the start of Kai’s cult! We know Kai is going to be a cult leader (it was revealed to us by show creators Ryan and Brad). What we know from cults is that it tends to be a community that shares. Typically shares the same ideas, and sometimes, even shares the same name, like the Manson family. It will be interesting to see how their relationship pans out, especially if more recruits start to trickle into Kai’s following…or are there already more? I 100% think there is more than just them, because we do see that hand holding the iPhone recording Kai getting beat down, and the nails on the hand holding the phone were not painted and long like we see Winter’s are during the pinky promise scene! Ahhhhhh so much suspense! So many more questions!
I don’t know about you all but I am so damn jacked after watching this episode. It’s giving this season so much more promise than I expected! Thanks for obsessing over AHS with me in my first ever Pure Fandom article! I can’t wait to discuss more with you all each week.
