Was ‘Wonder Woman’ a one-off or can DC follow it up with another hit?

After a stuttering start that kicked off with the forgettable Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was followed by the nonsensical Suicide Squad, the DC Extended Universe finally struck the right formula with its recent Wonder Woman adventure. The origin story starring Gal Gadot as Diana of Themyscira has received widespread critical acclaim, with an impressive score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. To put that into perspective, The Dark Knight which is generally considered to be the best superhero movie of all time, has a score of 94%. Now, DC will be desperately hoping that they can follow up this stunning success with Justice League and finally hold a flame to Marvel’s cinematic dominance.

It could be argued that DC should now center on Wonder Woman as the primary character in this new cinematic universe, as multitudes of viewers now feel a deep connection to the honorable heroine. Judging by most of the trailers that have been teased so far, it looks as though a large chunk of the film will be on Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman around as he goes looking for the other members to form his Justice League team. There is a great danger here that the establishing of this band of superheroes will happen in a similar way to Suicide Squad, which felt severely disjointed as it went about giving each villain their own rushed backstory, versus focusing on the task at hand.

Comic book fans are already familiar with a lot of the characters that will be introduced in the new offering from DC. But wider audiences should have some idea as well. There have, of course, been plenty of films based on Batman and Superman, and there is a current TV series about The Flash.

For gamers, there is also a Justice League slot game available to play online, which features other characters such as the infamous Green Lantern, who is a founding member of the Justice League. It has fewer symbols and therefore more stacked wins, thus dispelling the myth that celebrity slots pay out less than traditional machines. Other online slots myths were busted too, such as slot machines being programmed to adjust themselves based on the number of times players win or lose. With Injustice 2 recently out for console gamers, DC really shouldn’t have to spend too much time introducing characters that are already fairly well-established in popular culture. Instead, they should be able to just jump straight into the action (we hope).

Superman fans may be worried that the Man of Steel won’t be making a return in the upcoming movie, as the hero played by Henry Cavill hasn’t appeared in any of the trailers up to now. The most likely scenario is that the Kryptonian will make a dramatic return from the grave at some pivotal moment in the film, just when they need him the most. Justice League is likely to have more focus on Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher, and Ezra Miller’s portrayal of The Flash. All three of these will then go on to get their own films at a later date. Let’s just hope that Wonder Woman wasn’t a one-off, and DC can provide some more quality viewing in this superhero collaboration movie.
