Shadowhunters recap: Season 2, Episode 12, “You Are Not Your Own” aired June 12th, 2017
Alright guys, it’s that time. This episode was absolutely heartbreaking, and we have a lot to talk about and a lot of crying to do. But before we get into it I just want to focus on something positive and say: Sizzy!!! Had!!! Actual!!! Screen time!!! It’s happening! Can we just take a quick second to scream about it???
Okay now that we’ve had that moment of happiness, it’s time to grab a tissue box and start crying again. If you say this episode didn’t break your heart at least 68 times…you’re lying.
Azazel is officially on my shit list. At the end of last episode he switched Magnus and Valentines’ bodies to get Valentine to reveal the location of the mortal cup. Now Valentine is walking around as Magnus, while Magnus is trapped inside the Institute as Valentine. And the worst part is…no one besides Azazel knows.
Witches turn to water…demons turn to dust?
If there’s one person Magnus could never refuse, it’s Alec Lightwood. So when Magnus blows him off in a very curt phone call, Alec immediately knows something’s up. After heading over to Magnus’ apartment, he sees Azazel and attributes his presence to Magnus acting so off. He shoots the demon square in the chest and Azazel screams and turns to dust. One problem solved right?
Sizzy: Partners in crime
After being threatened by Raphael, Simon reaches out to Izzy for help. In a sweet moment between the two, Isabelle comes clean to Simon and tells him that she was only seeing Raphael because she developed an addiction to vampire venom. Simon admits that his mom also struggled with addiction, so he knows that staying clean means staying away. Izzy however, is determined to help and takes Simon to Rosa, Raphael’s sister. They send a picture to Raphael and tell him that if he hurts Simon they know how to hurt him.
If you love me, believe me
The scene between Alec and Magnus (who is presumed to be Valentine) is probably one of the most heartbreaking moments this season. Alan Van Sprang’s portrayal of Magnus was so on point (and vice versa) that I forgot the actors didn’t actually switch bodies to film this episode. Alec confronts “Valentine” who reveals that he’s actually Magnus. Close to tears, he reminds Alec about a night they spent together in Tokyo, and about how they had their first “I love you” after the soul sword massacre. Unfortunately, it’s just too much to believe and Alec storms out of the room leaving a teary Magnus behind.
The date crashers
Unaware that he’s oblivious, Izzy mentions that Jace isn’t Clary’s brother while they’re having lunch at the Jade Wolf. Simon is obviously distressed about what it all means, but before they can get too into it, Raphael and the rest of his vampires portal in and try to stake Simon right in the middle of the restaurant. Attempting to escape, Simon reveals to them that he is indeed a Daylighter and can walk in the sun. The revelation causes the other vampires to back off and leave Simon behind in one piece. Luke warns Simon not to get to cocky, because although he may be a Daylighter he’s not invincible.
Jace is a Herondale
After ongoing torture and multiple goes with the agony rune Magnus is clearly breaking apart. No one, not even Alec believes him and I’m not gonna lie, I cried twice. And by twice I mean I full on had to pause the episode because I couldn’t hear it over my own sobbing.
Right before Inquisitor Herondale executes “Valentine” a hologram of the real Valentine shows up and reveals that he is indeed trapped in Magnus’ body. He also drops the bomb that Jace is a Herondale as well…which makes him the Inquistor’s grandson. Presenting her with an ultimatum, Valentine threatens to kill Jace who he has taken captive, if she does not deliver his real body back to him.
Fixing Clary’s runes
Throughout the episode, Clary’s been struggling with making her new runes work. She admits that having these unique skills made her finally feel like she had a purpose as a Shadowhunter. After a monitored training session with Jace doesn’t seem to help, Sebastian steps in and makes it clear that Clary needs to feel the pain of the past in order to make the runes work again. Later in the episode, Sebastian gives Clary a harsh but necessary speech about her mom’s death, which helps Clary break through a powerful ward Valentine placed in front of Magnus’ apartment.
Freaky Friday finally ends
The Inquisitor lets Magnus go and he heads to his apartment to trade himself for Jace. Magnus and Valentine use a spell to switch their bodies back, and Clary immediately charges in and tackles Valentine into a portal that leads him back to the Institute. All’s well that ends well I guess. Except for um, I don’t know…all the physical and emotional torture Magnus Bane just went through that he may never fully recover from???
A late night stroll
Later that night, we see Simon and Isabelle taking a walk through the park in the rain. Izzy asks Simon about the recovery groups his mom went to and he promises to send her the info. Izzy also tells Simon not to worry about Clary not being Jace’s brother, because like Rosa said earlier…he’s a catch.
After going back home, Simon confronts Clary about Jace and she admits that she kept the secret because she didn’t want him to worry. Despite the change in circumstance, Clary’s not going anywhere.
