If you haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet, go watch it. And seriously, who wouldn’t want to? So many people have been talking about it and its importance. It’s the first big-screen movie that features a female superhero as the main character. Not only that, but it also set a record for the biggest box-office opening for a woman-directed movie.
So now that DC has finally gained acclaim again with Princess Diana, what will Marvel do about this?
Why wasn’t Marvel first?
Some Marvel fans are understandably confused that DC was the first to make a female superhero-centered movie. After all, DC hasn’t had much success in the past few years with Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad getting lukewarm reviews. And Marvel has so many strong female characters in the MCU. So why haven’t they gotten their own movies yet?
Agent Carter: what could’ve been
Agent Peggy Carter was introduced in the first Captain America movie as a kickass secret agent and Steve Rogers’s love interest. We later found out that she went on to be a founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. All in all, she was an interesting and strong female character that audiences soon fell in love with. Marvel created the ABC show “Marvel’s Agent Carter” in 2015, and sadly it was canceled in 2016 after only two seasons. Its viewership decreased over the two years but its critical ratings were very high. Many fans were upset by the cancellation but were happy Peggy Carter got at least a little taste of the spotlight.
Black Widow: what might be
The idea of a Black Widow standalone movie has been thrown around by Marvel fans for years. It was even considered at one point but was put on the backburner to focus on other heroes and their storylines. This is a shame because there is so much that could be done with Black Widow’s character and story, whether it’s in the present or is an origin story. Scarlett Johansson recently said that she discusses the project with Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers) very frequently. So even though we haven’t seen one yet, we might see a Black Widow movie on the horizon.
Captain Marvel: what will be
Thankfully, we do have a Marvel heroine-centered movie on the way. Captain Marvel is due to be released in 2019. It stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. Danvers/Captain Marvel is largely considered to be one of the most powerful Marvel heroes of all time, regardless of gender. So naturally the hype for the movie is already building. Even though DC got the first word on a female-led superhero movie, will Captain Marvel blow Wonder Woman away? We have until 2019 to find out.
Wonder Woman is a huge step forward to seeing more female superheroes on the big screen. Despite the pressure put on the movie to do well, it’s gained plenty of praise from fans and critics alike. We’ll have to wait and see if Marvel’s projects do any better. But let’s face it: in any case, it’s awesome seeing these ladies kick butt onscreen.
