The CW has ordered the first season of Black Lightning. The trailer is out, and we couldn’t be more excited! Here’s everything we know so far about the next superhero to shock his way into our hearts and DVRs.
Once upon a time, Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) was your everyday badass Olympic decathlete… by day. By night, he protected his neighborhood from a gang called “The 100” with his electrifying capabilities. In the trailer, we learn that his wife convinced him that he had done enough crime busting and that he needed to live a safer life so he could be a father to his two daughters. So, he calms down and becomes the principal of the local high school. But once again, The 100 have overrun the Suicide Slum where Pierce lives and he decides to return to his alter ego… Black Lightning.
Through the comics we are aware that Pierce has two daughters. They also happen to have powers. It is unclear if Anissa (a.k.a. Thunder) has her powers in the show. However, Jennifer (a.k.a. Lightning) can clearly be seen developing the powers that she has inherited from her father. It will be very interesting to see how the show deals with a teenager that is coming into her powers, since so far, they have focused on adults simply managing theirs.
Also, Jennifer Pierce will be played by the fabulous China Anne McClain — known for her roles in House of Payne, A.N.T. Farm, and Disney’s Descendants 2. I simply can’t wait to see what she does with this role.
Connection to other Arrowverse Shows
About that… there is none. Show creator Greg Berlanti stated in the early stages of the show that this would be completely separate from his other CW shows. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, that means that we don’t have to worry about a catastrophe from one show causing issues on this one (*cough* Diggle’s son). However, it also means that we probably won’t get any awesome crossovers like we have seen from the other shows.
It does pose the question, though. Pierce lives in the slums of Metropolis, otherwise known as Superman’s stomping grounds. So maybe we shouldn’t count everything out just yet.
Strong Production Crew
Not only is Berlanti the creator of this wonderful project, but he has also recruited producers Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil. This dynamic duo is responsible for great shows such as Girlfriends, The Game, and Being Mary Jane. You really couldn’t ask for a better team to bring DC’s first black comic superhero to the TV screen.
Well, there you have it! Who is excited about this awesome new addition to our superhero line up? I know I am! In case you haven’t seen the awesome trailer yet, feast your eyes!
Comment and let us know what about the show you are looking forward to the most.
