James Marsters at Wizard World St. Louis: A geek just like all of us!
Written by Liz Prugh
This weekend I had the pleasure of moderating James Marsters, best known for his iconic role as Spike (William the Bloody) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its hit spinoff, Angel. I had moderated James a few times prior, and each time I chat with him I’m reminded of why he’s one of my favorite celebrities to interview. A true geek himself, James understands and appreciates why his fans are so loyal, passionate, and enthusiastic about his appearances at comic cons.
6 reasons ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ is still the best show in TV history
I try to learn something new about James and his characters with every interview (in addition to reliving moments like him singing his infamous song from Buffy’s “Once More With Feeling” — see a clip of that below!)
Here are 5 geek-tastic things you may not have known about James:
1. He loves Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek.
He’s a nerd, too! He loves the genre shows, because not only are they awesome for obvious reasons (space, sci-fi, and fantasy, oh my!) they tend to touch on social issues more than others.
15 Reasons Why ‘Angel’ Should Be Your Next TV Binge
2. He was one of the first 500 people to see Star Wars: A New Hope.
Episode IV is arguably James’ favorite Star Wars film — and for good reason! James shared that he was one of the first 500 people to see the film after editing. Watch him recount the amazing experience:
3. He loves how much butt Buffy kicked, just like the rest of us!
20 years ago, a blonde female kicking vampire-butt on TV was groundbreaking. Thankfully, Buffy helped to break those gender-barriers on TV. We have her (and Joss!) as two of the people to thank for shows like Marvel’s Jessica Jones and for film characters like Avengers’ Black Widow. James also knew from day one that this shows was something special, with its groundbreaking themes being one of the many reasons.
4. Despite being the coolest vampire (ever), he’s still a goofy dad.
James shared a hilarious story about when his daughter saw him on one of her favorite shows, Supernatural.
5. He has a new geek-tastic venture called ViDiOTS.
James’ latest project is a web series that he writes, directs, and stars in with Mark Devine. It’s hilarious and worth a look from any Marsters fan:
“ViDiOTS follows the adventures of two lovable fools; James Marsters and Mark Devine (Sex and the City, CSI: Miami) as they travel the globe with their trusty PS4. During the day they explore distant cities and foreign countries, meet with journalists and fans, and record TV and movies.”
Learn more about ViDiOTS on its website, Facebook, and Twitter. You can also find James voicing Cassandra Clare’s next audio book for her Shadowhunters series.
