Star Wars Rebels review: Season 3, Episode 18, “Secret Cargo,” Aired March 4, 2017
After last week’s tension-filled episode, this action-packed installment of Star Wars Rebels was a welcome change in pace. In “Secret Cargo,” the show continues to bring back familiar faces and fill in important gaps leading up to the formation of the Rebellion. Let’s talk highlights!
Mon Mothma Unites the Rebels
We finally get to see the birth of the Rebel Alliance as Mon Mothma delivers a speech asking others to stand up against the Empire and inspiring many across the galaxy to join the fight. The rallying speech was delivered to perfection by Genevieve O’Reilly, who was reprising her role from Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One.
Earlier in the episode, Mon Mothma spoke out against the Emperor, calling him a “lying executioner.” She tried fighting the Empire from the inside through her dealings in the Senate, but her efforts proved to be ineffective. This ultimately lead to her decision to leave the Senate and join the Rebels on the front lines.
Hera and Ezra Take Point
Although this episode didn’t have a lot of deep character moments, it still let the Rebels shine, particularly Ezra and Hera. We get to see more of Ezra’s piloting skills. Thanks to his Jedi powers and Hera’s training, he’s able to outmaneuver the TIE pilot with relative ease. Ezra has clearly learned from the best, as Hera’s quick thinking is what frees the Ghost from the Destroyer’s tractor beam.
The episode had some other interesting Hera moments. When the Ghost pilot first meets Mon Mothma, she’s a little awed. Hera isn’t phased by much, but it was fun to see her get kind of star-struck. Later in the episode, she and Mon Mothma share a candid conversation about the Rebellion over a couple of cups of caf. The two women talk about the struggles they’ve faced – Mon Mothma in the Senate and Hera on the front lines. Despite the hardships, they both know that the Rebellion is worth it and will do whatever it takes to take down the Empire.
Nearing the End?
With each episode, we’re moving closer and closer to Rogue One and A New Hope territory, which can’t be good news for some of our heroes. Thrawn continues to anticipate the Rebels’ moves, and it seems very likely that our heroes will suffer a major loss at the hands the Admiral. While we’re getting closer to A New Hope, there’s still a lot to cover, especially since the show was just renewed for a fourth season. Whether that’ll be Rebels’ final season remains to be seen.
