‘Teen Wolf’: Mythology of the Ghost Riders

Season 6 of Teen Wolf is in full swing and it’s pretty epic. For the show’s final season, the gang is facing off against a new villain, the Ghost Riders. In the show, the Ghost Riders rode the storm in to Beacon Hills and started taking people. Not only do they take them, they wipe them from people’s memories. This has been the fate of our dear, sweet Stiles. Let’s take a look at the real mythology behind these super creepy bad guys!

The Myth:

The myth of the Ghost Riders and the Wild Hunt began as an old English folk tale but is also found in many other regions. It was said that a group of wild huntsmen would come in a frenzy and in a storm. The Riders were thought to be of the fairy world or perhaps just dead men. Seeing the Wild Hunt was meant to signal a terrible event or war that was coming. Much like on Teen Wolf, the myth also suggests that the Riders would take people into the underworld. In the North American version, the huntsmen are called Ghost Riders and are cowboys (like the Ghost Riders on Teen Wolf). They are cursed men forced to chase the Devil’s herd of cattle. Also mentioned in the original myth is that there is a leader of the hunt, something we have yet to see on the show.

The Songs “Riders on the Storm”

There are many songs about the Wild Hunt. The most notable song these days (and the song used on the show) is “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors. The song starts with the sounds of a storm and launches into a the haunting first words of the song, “Riders on the Storm.”

Notable Lyrics:

“There’s a killer on the road”

“If you give this man a ride, sweet family will die”

And (my personal favorite #Stydia)

“Girl, you gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends”

Key Points in the myth: So there are many variations of this myth but they have some things in common. There are men riding in the sky by storm, they have hounds, there is a leader and they either take people or people join the Hunt.

Things to consider based on this myth: Could there be a leader of the Ghost Riders that we don’t yet know about? It’s most likely not anyone we already know, that wouldn’t make sense. It’s fair to assume it isn’t Mr. Douglas because he was in that tube thing with the Dread Doctors. What about a certain formerly dead wife and mother, Mrs. Stilinski? We still aren’t super sure about why and how she is back. What if she is the leader of the Wild Hunt? The myth (in most cases) states that the leader of the hunt can be male or female.

What do you think of the Ghost Riders and the myth? Do you think there is a leader of the Ghost Riders that we haven’t met yet? If so, who? Hit the comments and tell us!
