Let’s Get Lit!: Kerrie L. Hughes, editor of SHADOWED SOULS

Welcome to the last “Let’s Get Lit!” of 2016, right here on Here we will chat with an editor about their work and their favorite nerdy loves! This super cool edition will feature editor extraordinaire, Kerrie L. Hughes!

SHADOWED SOULS is a collection of short stories with a dark fantasy twist. The anthology includes a new Dresden Files story from Jim Butcher, who also served as an editor for this book! I had the chance to chat with Kerrie about her inspiration behind this project, Harry Potter and her editing process.

Meg Bonney: Hi Kerrie! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat! You are the editor of Shadowed Souls, a dark, gritty collection of short stories. What else can you tell us about it?

Kerrie L. Hughes: Shadowed Souls was a labor of love for me that took four years from concept to finish to complete. It’s my biggest anthology to date.

MB: That’s awesome! So, this book has a Dresden Files story centering on a Dresden character named Molly. Do you have a favorite Dresden Files book?

KLH: I really can’t choose a favorite but Proven Guilty sticks with me because of the Molly thread. Molly is my second favorite character next to Harry. I was so excited when Jim told me he would write a Molly story for this collection.

MB: I love Molly too! What is your editing ritual like?

KLH: It’s malleable. I never edit for my voice or taste. I edit for the author in a fashion that is more like what a first reader peer does for another author. It’s my job to make the parameters clear, keep the project on time, and provide encouragement.

MB: What other projects do you have in the works?

KLH: Right now everything is all about my own novels. I have several in the works in my own paranormal year and I expect them to start hitting the shelves in 2018.

MB: I can’t wait for those! Where can folks find SHADOWED SOULS?

KLH: Everywhere. Amazon, B&N, airports, independent book stores, (my favorite) and I just found out that Target is carrying it online.

MB: We all get way too into our fandoms here at What fandom makes you geek out the most? (A book, movie or TV show)

KLH: I am really into Dresden obviously but I’m also a big fan of Harry Potter. My secret pleasure is Big Brother, I’m really into watching the 24/7 feeds and the psychological dynamics of the game play.

MB: We are always on the hunt for a good book. What are you loving right now?

KLH: I just started Daniel Jose Older’s Half Resurrection Blues, so far so good.

MB: You and Jim Butcher have to compete on a team together on either Project Runway, Big Brother or Survivor. Which one would you pick and why?

KLH: I would borrow his gf Kitty Krell for Project Runway, she’s a seamstress who makes great corsets and costumes. Jim would hate Big Brother and I would hate to do Survivor.

MB: Lastly, any advice for writers out there who are still working on getting published?

KLH: Finish the book, then worry about publishing.

MB: Great advice! Thanks so much for chatting today!
